The Father

Saturn turns direct today after almost 5 months in retrograde motion. As a result, it may start to feel like it’s time to take charge of your life and your responsibilities.

The Father card — the Tarot of the Origins version of the Emperor — refers to stepping up to the plate and assuming a position of authority. It’s about striving for personal and professional success. And it’s about wielding your personal power in a fair and just manner.

This card symbolizes worldly acclaim and ambition. But it’s also tied to personal obligations, such as areas in your life where you may need to take on a parental role.

You may be called upon to counsel another or to offer guidance based on the wisdom of your own experience. Or like the Father figure in this card, your greatest gift may be the ability to truly hear what others have to say without judgment or censure.

Although there are definite masculine elements to this card, the references don’t only apply to men. It can refer to a single mother, a career-woman, or a woman with important responsibilities. It can also describe a man in your life (or someone new coming in) who embodies these qualities.

Mercury trines Uranus today as well. This aspect says that you don’t have to only rely on the wisdom of the ages when it comes to making decisions.You can move toward the future and embrace the idea of thinking outside the box, while still honoring those ancient traditions.

Red Phoenix Four

As the Sun and Neptune come together in an inconjunct formation today, you may be wondering, “is that all there is?”

The Red Phoenix Four — Feng Shui Tarot’s version of the Four of Cups — speaks of struggling with feelings of discontent or dissatisfaction. The focus is on what might be lacking or missing in your life, rather than what’s right there before you.

The Phoenix in this card is seen standing at the base of a cliff, looking off toward distant horizons. How easy would it be for him to elevate himself — rising above whatever disillusionment he’s feeling from his current vantage point — and fly to the other side?

But lack of motivation and lethargy are also hallmark features of the Four of Cups — as they are with the Sun / Neptune inconjunct. There’s also generally a lack of energy, which may mean it’s going to be a lazy day where you don’t feel like doing much of anything.

One of the positive aspects of this card though is that it reveals to you exactly what’s “wrong with this picture” and allows you the opportunity to make it right. And the Sun / Neptune aspect can do the same. It can get you thinking about how things could be — in an ideal world or at least with respect to following your dreams — and then what you can do to make those dreams a reality.

While you may start out thinking “what’s the point?” you’ll have a clearer idea of what’s worth salvaging and what could use a little more work in the end. Like the Phoenix in this card, the idea of taking flight and seeing what’s on the other side becomes a lot more appealing than allowing yourself to remain stuck where you are and wondering what might have been.

Strength

Venus retrogrades back into Leo today, bringing us all a little closer to taming the lion within.

We might be asking ourselves what we’re struggling with that requires us to dig down deep and find our inner reserves of strength.

Today’s card — Strength from the Sacred Rose Tarot — is all about mastering our fears and conquering our demons. It’s about gaining control of the “beast” within.

It refers not to physical strength but to courage, will-power and self-control. It can also mean finding an appropriate outlet for something that you may have responded to in a less than positive manner in the past. Whatever it is, know that this card encourages you to stay on course and not fall back into unhealthy reactions or patterns.

The woman in this card has literally become one with the Lion. She wraps her arms around him in a loving embrace, while still granting him the honor and respect he deserves.

She knows that the key to success comes from both gaining the Lion’s trust and not giving into her fears. The imagery in this card is all the more poignant, in light of recent events.

As Venus moves back into Leo today — and as we are greeted with a “once in blue Moon” Full Moon in Aquarius — we want to remember that there’s a place in the world for all of us and that each of us are deserving of compassion and respect.

The Strength card reminds us that we all also have access to a wellspring of personal strength and power. How we use ours — and what impact our using it has on the rest of the world — will say more about our true character than just about anything else.

Seven of Pentacles

You may find yourself at a professional crossroads today, feeling torn between following your dreams and doing what’s already proven itself to be safe and secure.

The Seven of Pentacles — like all Sevens — represents choices and dilemmas. With respect to your work or business, it can translate to feeling like you’re missing our on something by doing what you do really well but that your heart just isn’t into.

Mercury inconjuncts Pluto today, bringing with it the potential for temptations to turn into full-fledged compulsions and obsessions.

Sometimes we have to make sacrifices (also a hallmark of the tarot’s Seven cards). We can give up our job security in order to pursue our dreams; or we can give up our dreams in order to maintain our job security. It’s a catch-22.

The woman in this card — from Cathy McClelland’s fantastic Star Tarot — is faced just such a dilemma. She can’t decide whether she wants to throw herself fully into her work — which she’s already invested energy in and which is also already clearly producing results — or whether she wants to move in a completely different direction.

The colorful horses galloping across the sky seem to be calling out to her to follow. These are her dreams and aspirations, none yet fully formed. There are Seven of them — just as there are Seven Pentacles and Seven butterflies, all representing different choices and opportunities.

You’ll have to think about what is most important to you today as the Seven of Pentacles is a card of priorities as well as choices. Ideally you’ll find a way to turn what you dream of doing and what you are doing into one and the same. This is all any of us can hope for in the end.

Prince of Wands

Today’s card, the Prince of Wands — the Druid Craft Tarot’s version of the Knight of Wands — speaks of gathering up the courage and confidence that’s needed to go after your goals.

It may be a dream you’d set aside because you lacked the time, energy or resources to follow it n the past. It could be an interest that’s been calling out to you that’s no longer possible to resist. And it might be something (or someone) you’re passionate about that you’re only now in a position to pursue.

The Prince of Wands encourages you to move past your fears and go after your dreams with the attitude that nothing can stand in your way. You don’t want to waiver or second-guess yourself; you want to grab onto opportunities that present themselves without a moment’s hesitation.

This doesn’t mean you ought to go gallivanting across the countryside without a plan. Keep in mind that the Prince of Wands can be a bit rash — in an act first and figure out how to get out of whatever predicament you’ve gotten yourself into later sort of way. Because he runs on adrenaline, he has a tendency to lose interest in anything that becomes routine.

If this is someone in your life, you will know him by his confidence and bravado. He may he here to teach you the importance of embracing some of these qualities yourself. But if instead this card represents an energy and attitude you already possess, keep in mind the importance of making preparations and pacing yourself so you don’t run out of steam.

If you’ve been thinking about where you’re heading — in your relationships, with your career, or in your life in general — now is the time to reflect on how far you’ve come and to make preparations for whatever obstacles may still lie ahead.

You may be hesitant about what the future holds, especially if things aren’t laid out before you in ways that are crystal clear. Like the figures in this card — from Elizabeth Hazel’s gorgeous Whispering Tarot — you may need to exercise caution when scoping out your horizons.

The Nine Wands in this card are actually trees that offer refuge and protection for these weary travelers. They offer a safe haven — a place to rest — for them to get their bearings and gather their strength.

Mercury and Neptune are in hard (sesquisquare) aspect today. This is a tricky configuration because it creates tension between the planet related to thoughts and ideas (Mercury) and the planet related to dreams and aspirations (Neptune). It can manifest as illogical doubts and fears, which you don’t want to let hold you back.

The Nine of Wands asserts that while things may not be easy — and while there are bound to be more challenges ahead — it’s hardly the time to throw in the towel. You need only think about how far you’ve come (and how much you’ve already accomplished) to find the motivation to push ahead.

Today you may encounter someone who inspires you to open up your heart and express your true feelings without fear or censure.

This could be an individual in your life (male or female) or it could describe qualities that you yourself need to develop. Qualities like love, affection, romance, and emotional expression.

The Knight of Cups tends to be “in love with love,” in which case he’s apt to be better at the hearts-and-flowers aspects of romance than he is at the nitty gritty. While not exactly the proverbial Knight in Shining Armor, does have a certain romantic sweep-you-off-your-feet vibe. He’s ardent and passionate with a lot to say and a colorful way of saying it.

There is a bit of a dramatic flair associated with this Knight. He can be chivalrous and gallant when he needs to be. Or when the mood calls for a softer approach he can be sensitive, caring and kind.

If this is someone in your life, you will know him by his charm, sensitivity, and emotional availability. He may be a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces) or he may just possess those same sensitivities.

As Uranus officially turns retrograde in Aries today you may see many ideas presenting themselves in a whole new light, along with the means to accomplish them.

If you have been having a hard time putting your skills to the test at work or with something you are wishing to build this is the time you find that everything falls into place for you.

You have the energy, drive and ambition to reach your goals all you need is to take that first step to launch in the direction you wish to find yourself. By being practical and following your heart you can shed that which is not working for you and take on a whole new persona in relation to your work.

The colors on this card — this version from the Golden Tarot of Klimt — give an idea as to the attributes which surround you. The brown background keeps you stable and practical, the red on the dress shows determination and action, and the yellows represent the ideas that you have.

Notice the snake curling around the right arm as if something is consciously being shed and changed in order to tune into what you wish to accomplish. This is in keeping with Uranus’s retrograde motion, which implores you to retrace some of your earlier steps. Even the snakes head dips into a bowl held in the left hand (representing intuition and ideas).

This Magician card ties in beautifully with the Venus retrograde as well — encourages you to use your head to access your own brilliance and originality (Uranus retrograde) without sacrificing your heart (Venus retrograde). The images in this card reminds you to make the most of both.

As Venus turns retrograde in Virgo today (and Uranus turns retrograde in Aries tomorrow), you may be thinking about how your own unique contributions to the world set you apart from everyone else.

It may be a matter of rising above your current situation and getting an overview of all the opportunities that are out there for you.

The Three of Fire — the beautiful Japaridze Tarot’s version of the Three of Wands — is all about expanding your horizons and finding ways to make an imprint on the world around you.

Chances are good you’ve already started to hit your stride. This is a hallmark of the Three of Fire. Having completed the initial stages of something — having “lifted off” — and seeing that there are vast new horizons to explore.

This card is all about enterprise and innovation. Bringing something new and different to the table and doing it in a way that’s never been seen before.

The Six of Shells — Animal Wisdom Tarot’s version of the Six of Cups — says it’s time to do just that. The Manatees in this card aren’t thinking about all the work piling up at the office or all the emails they have respond to at home.

No they’re fully engaged in a game of catch, while the rest of the world floats by around them. This is the essence of the Six of Shells. Having fun, being playful and immersing yourself in the present rather than fretting about the past.

There’s a childlike innocence and wonder associated with this card. In fact children may figure prominently for you today and the thoughts of your own childhood may be triggered by their presence. If so consider it a call to observe their ability to live in the moment and follow in kind.

The Manatee as an animal totem speaks of companionship, trust and gentle play. It encourages you to take turns, share, and accept those around you for who and what they are.

The Six of Shells is all about finding pleasure in the simpler things in life. It says it’s time to kick your shoes off and have fun rather than getting bogged down with responsibilities. The Ace of Wands — this version from Nathalie Hertz’s gorgeous Fantastical Tarot — is all about manifesting your dreams and desires. Taking your life in your own hands. Following your Bliss. And going after your goals with the kind of gusto that makes saying “Yes!” an absolute rather than a maybe.

It’s about increased confidence, drive and enthusiasm. Ardor. Vitality. Passion. Creativity. Power. Potential.

The Wand in this card is a pillar of strength. The intricate dragon carvings suggest a sort of magical essence that is very much a part of the Ace of Wands. And there’s beauty and creativity present here as well. The vines and wildflowers springing up from its base reminds us that this card is less about might and more about merriment.
