Aries: King of Wands

How comfortable are you feeling with your own power? This month you might need to find out; as you’re probably going to need to step forward and take charge of a situation that needs a strong, confident and authoritative hand.

The King of Wands — this version from the Crystal Tarot —  is often a force to be reckoned with. He’s strong, confident, powerful and imposing; in other words, not someone anyone is going to want to trifle with.

He is dynamic and expansive. He embodies Fire sign qualities: warmth, charisma, passion, ardor. And Leo qualities in particular, according to this card. He does everything — and experiences everything — in a big way.

As with all of the court cards, this King can represent a person in your life, in this case someone who possesses strong leadership qualities and who has a larger-than-life presence that’s impossible to ignore. He can also represent a state of mind — as in displaying an infectious confidence and enthusiasm that draws people to you and elevates you in their eyes. And he can represent an event — such as a promotion or recognition from your peers.

If this is someone in your life, know that he’s here to pull you out of your shell. He’s here to teach — and to show you through example — how to live life to the fullest and to embrace it with a passion.

He may be a friend, a lover, or an authority figure, or he may be someone entering for just a brief period of time. Whatever role he plays in your life, the message for you is the same: It’s time to stand up and take charge and show the rest of the world what you’re capable of.

TAURUS: Four of Cups

This month, with your ruler (Venus) involved in a t-square with the Moon and Neptune, you may find yourself dealing with feelings of disillusionment or discontent.

You may be asking yourself, “Is that all there is?” especially if you’ve attained something you so desperately longed for in the past, only to see it differently now that you’ve attained it.

It may represent a relationship that’s lost its luster, a job that turns out to be tedious rather than rewarding, or a set of ideals that under the harsh light of day no longer seems so inspiring.

The Four of Cups — this version from the beautiful (and now out of print) Hezicos Tarot — can relate to a lack of motivation or a lethargy so profound that it threatens to numb you or trap you in your sense of boredom. It can have you wondering whether there might be something else out there that would excite or inspire you.

It can also relate to a lack of energy, which may mean it could turn into period of inertia where you don’t feel like doing much of anything. It speaks of wondering whether there might be something else out there that would excite or inspire you.

The focus may be on what is lacking in your life, rather than what’s right there before you. One of the positive aspects of this card though is that it reveals to you exactly what’s “wrong with this picture” and allows you the opportunity to make it right.

It can get you thinking about how things could be — in an ideal world or at least with respect to following your dreams — and then what you can do to make those dreams a reality. While you may start out thinking “what’s the point?” you’ll have a clearer idea of what’s worth salvaging and what could use a little more work in the end.

GEMINI: The Lovers

This month, with the Sun, Moon, Jupiter and Venus all moving through your 7th house, relationships and relationship issues are bound to take center stage.

The Lovers card — this version from the Joie de Vivre Tarot — is all about relationships and choices that need to be made regarding them. These may be complicated by temptations that emerge, forcing you to have to choose between dual principles or desires.

The lovers card is tied to Gemini, emphasizing the need for communications, which happens to also be the title of this card. That means listening as well as speaking, as can be seen with the figures in this card.

The couple in card aren’t watching the road ahead of them. They’re fully engrossed in one another, as are the creatures upon which they ride.Their hands (and tails) are intertwined, making it hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. The bird flying overhead carries a message of love.

Openness and honesty are important features in any relationship and will go a long ways toward keeping the love alive. This is going to be especially important for you, since your ruler (Mercury) is also retrograde for the better part of the month.

This card emphasizes the harmonious exchange of ideas. It’s about being on the same page — and moving in the same direction. Seeing eye to eye on important issues. And hearing the other person out.

Whatever your plans this month, leave room for spontaneity. This isn’t the time to get caught up in serious or monotonous plans. It’s more about sharing ideas with those you love, and expressing your feelings openly.

Cancer: Two of Wands

Be on the lookout this month for opportunities that are available to you, even those that may not be so readily apparent from your current vantage point.

The Two of Wands — this version from the gorgeous Shadowscapes Tarot — speaks of having put an initial plan into action (with the Ace of Wands) and seeing it starting to gather momentum. It means that something has started to happen — something that’s big enough to assure you you’re on the right track, but not yet well-thought out enough to ensure that it’s a go.

This could be something that was once just a dream or half-formed vision about where you see yourself “down the road.” You may be thinking of going back to school, or looking for another job or approaching someone you’re interested in and asking them out to dinner. It doesn’t have to be something big. But it can lead to something huge.

The Two of Wands asks, “What are you waiting for?” and “why are you holding back?” It tells you that there’s no time like the present to put yourself out there and take at least the first steps toward pursuing your goals.

You may not have fully fleshed out your ideas. And that’s perfectly ok. The Two of Wands speaks of putting something into action that will gather momentum over time. It encourages you to expand your horizons and reach for broader vistas. It speaks of taking a look at your long-term goals and acting on them with courage and conviction.

If you’ve been hesitating due to fear or uncertainty, now is the time to put those worries aside. You’re already seeing how some moves are paying off, and are now in a position to take things to the next level. The Two of Wands says that all you aspire to is now within your grasp; you only need to gather up the courage and confidence to go after it.

LEO: Judgment

This month you could be taking stock of your life and looking at the actions and decisions that have led you who you are today.

The Judgment card calls for self-evaluation and awareness, a need to develop enough spiritual altitude to look objectively at your mistakes and shortcomings as well as your triumphs and victories.

It’s a powerful reminder that in order to put the past behind us we must not only let go of prior judgments but heal the wounds that have been holding us back. It’s a card of both atonement and forgiveness. Of unconditional love, understanding and acceptance — for both ourselves and for those who’ve hurt us or let us down.

This version of the Judgment card — from Dana Driscoll’s Tarot of Trees — focuses on the rebirth and renewal aspects of this card. A tiny acorn takes root beneath the earth’s surface as it emerges from the soil above. The rain both cleanses and nourishes it, as the cycle of life continues.

Take this time to tie up loose ends. This can be a literal letting go of the past, but it will more likely relate to putting yourself in other people’s shoes and seeing how the mistakes they’ve made or the grief they’ve caused have been just as much a part of being human and flawed as any direct attempt to cause you pain.

This card represents a summation of all that has come before, and an awareness that each step taken — from here on out — leaves an indelible imprint on our future. It represents a calling — a spiritual call to action, where the past meets the present and beckons you toward the future.

VIRGO: Six of Cups

This month you’re likely to find yourself surrounded by friends and loved ones as you take time to stop and smell the flowers or reminisce about the past.

Whether you’re physically with those who are near and dear or just revisiting them in your memories, you’re likely to taking a trip down memory lane.

The Six of Cups — this version from the World Spirit Tarot — speaks of innocence, sentimentality and memories from days gone by. You may be missing someone, longing for the comforts and companions that have gone by the wayside over time.

You could also hear from an old friend unexpectedly; someone who’s been on your mind and who reaches out across the miles, reminding you of long-forgotten events that come rushing back in a wave of nostalgia.

You may also feel the urge to reach out to those who remind you of life’s simpler pleasures, such as a family member or a childhood friend. And if you’re lucky enough to be surrounded by loved ones this month, you should have no problem recapturing those memories.

This is not the time to bring old grievances back to the forefront. It’s time to focus on pleasure, playfulness and joy, and working on creating new memories with those you love.

You may have been taking life too seriously and find yourself needing to get in touch with your inner child. Or you now may have to let your guard down and allow yourself to trust again — especially if you’ve been trying to guard your heart from pain. The Six of Cups is about sharing — like the Rabbit in this card — and bringing the happier memories from your past forward to today.

Libra: The Magician

This month should see you tapping into your own creative energy and harnessing “powers” that you didn’t even know you had. The Magician card — this version from the Feng Shui Tarot — refers to making something happen through your own skill, cunning and initiative.

Think about areas in your own life where you’ve felt you didn’t have what it takes to accomplish your goals.

It could be a career move or a relationship decision or even a personal change such as dieting, quitting smoking, tackling self-defeating thought processes, etc.

The Magician cards tells you that you not only do have the powers to make these things happen, but you’ve had them all along.

This has to be one of then most beautiful and colorful renditions of this card I’ve seen. The Magician is high up in the mountains amidst the clouds and open air.

The four cardinal points of the compass — the Black Tortoise, Red Phoenix, White Tiger and Green Dragon — are all here. They correlate archetypally to the four elements (fire/wands, water/cups, air/swords and earth/pentacles respectively.

The Magician himself is poised gracefully in their midst. This is a common theme among the different versions: having all of the necessary resources within reach.

Fire = action, initiative and drive. Water = emotions, feelings and intuition. Air = intellect, ideas and decisions. Earth = Structure, boundaries and material concerns. Together these assets make for some powerful “magic” that you can tap into and harness at will.

Scorpio: Ten of Swords

What do you do when you come to the end of as arduous journey and find yourself facing a very painful reality? The Ten of Swords begs this question as you’re faced with the knowledge that it may be time to lay down your sword.

Perhaps a relationship has run its course, and you’re forced now to finally put it to rest. Or maybe a dream you held onto for far too long is proving itself to be impossible to achieve.

You know that you’ve given it your all — you’ve fought a worthy battle — but you realize it’s time to let it go: once and for all. You just don’t have any more “fight” left in you. So what do you do? Do you lay down and die, or do you surrender to the knowledge that the Universe has something entirely different in store for you?

This is the Ten of Swords from the Mary-el Tarot. It’s often portrayed as one of the more ominous cards in the tarot, yet here we can see the focus is one of triumph and victory more than surrender and defeat.

A balsamic moon sits high in the background, the raven’s scythe pointed defiantly toward it. There’s a sense of liberation here in the imagery of this card. The vanquishing of ego; the surrendering of pride; the dissolution of conflict — these are all here. And what is left after all of these things have been abandoned? Victory, triumph and regeneration.

You may have to concede that you’ve fought a losing battle, but you’ll also want to look at how it’s brought you to where you are today. Are you not now a stronger and better person as a result? There may be moments where you feel alone or unsupported under the authority of this card. But the goal here is not to accept defeat: it’s to find the inner strength needed to conquer that which has driven you to your knees.

Sagittarius: Ace of Coins

With four planets (including the Sun and New Moon) moving through your sign this month, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to move in a different direction or start something new.

Are you thinking of launching a new business or starting a new financial venture? That is the message behind the Ace of Coins, which refers to new opportunities for growth, prosperity and abundance, of which material (financial) gain is only a small part of.

You may be looking back over your shoulder though, like the rabbit in this card — from the gorgeous Alchemical Tarot.

The Coin in this deck is fashioned like a compass with four arrows pointing in different directions. This ties in with the Mars in Libra conundrum. Which way do you go? Which path do you take? There are many different options and you may be drawn to every one.

The Ace of Coins is says it’s time to think about what you value, which extends to well beyond money and material things. It says it’s time to look at what you put out there and what you get back in exchange. Like the rabbit looking over his shoulder, you may have to clear up some unfinished business, but there’s no time like the present for that.

You may also feel that your luck is changing. As the Ace of Pentacles is associated with a positive change in fortune. It’s telling you to keep up the good work, to go after your dreams, and to be open to all that the Universe has to offer you.

But remember that money is called “currency” for a reason: It’s expected to flow, both to us and from us. We need to be willing to put our own resources to use if we want to attract more of the same. The Ace of Coins encourages you to participate in your own energetic exchange. Whether it’s time, money, energy or aid, all of us have resources at our disposal. Put yours to good use this month and see what the Universe sends back.

CAPRICORN: Eight of Swords

This month you may find yourself feeling stuck or trapped in a situation that is partly of your own doing. This can be a real eye-opener for you, as it’s much easier to blame someone or something else (outside circumstances) when we find ourselves stuck in what seems like an impossible predicament.

It may seem like there’s no way out — in fact in many decks this card is shown with the bound woman wearing a blindfold, hence the inability to “see” other options.

But in this rendition — from Timothy Lantz’s Archeon Tarot — it’s only her hair that obscures her vision, while the moon in the background provides enough light to illuminate the options she really has.

You may feel powerless in your current circumstances and may be so caught up in blaming the people or events that have brought you to this that you’re unable to see a way out. But this card encourages you to open your eyes, change your perspective and find a solution so that you can break free.

You may feel like you’re beating your head against a wall or like all of your efforts are being met with resistance. You may question whether the Universe is telling you to fight or to accept defeat — although neither of these is going to be the right course of action.

Seven of the Swords in this card appear to be slightly out reach. But the eighth — the most important one — is not only right there behind her, but looks to be already within her grasp, an indication of how simple the way out is if only she’s willing to take it.

The Eight of Swords calls for awareness, perspective and acceptance or responsibility. Only once you have achieved all three can you truly break free of the ties that bind you.

AQUARIUS: The Hermit

This month, with Mercury retrograde and with Saturn and Pluto moving through your 12th house, you might be taking a more active part in retreating from all of the commotion that surrounds you and moving toward a place of meditation and quiet reflection.

The Hermit card — this version from the Hudes Tarot —  refers to the yearning for wisdom and knowledge that so many of us possess but so few of us take the time to seek out and develop.

The Hermit card is not about avoidance and isolation. It’s about finding your inner light and choosing to follow it. This is especially important when Mercury is retrograde and you’re dealing with the unexpected.

This card encourages you to embrace solitude through whatever means you find necessary. It challenges you to rise above your mundane concerns and get a better understanding of yourself through searching for deeper meaning.

Be careful that you don’t spend so much time in your head that you miss out on opportunities that present themselves.They may seem random in the moment but reveal themselves later to be much more important than you’d realized.

You also want to be conscious of your own motivations: the downside of this card is the urge to hide things, close yourself off from others and avoid those who matter to you most.

This month you get to choose whether you’re lighting your own way or acting as a guidepost for those who have wandered away from theirs. Both are valid endeavors ,and only you will know which is the right path for you. As the Hermit card also refers to turning inward, there is an entire spectrum of information — from the depths of the psyche to the heights of conscious awareness that can be accessed through this process.

Pisces: Eight of Pentacles

What are you working on this month that you’ve put all of your heart and soul into? Whatever it is, know that now is the time to get the ball rolling and focus on making your plans manifest.

This isn’t about punching a clock somewhere and wishing the day was over so you could get back to whatever it is you really enjoy. It’s about finding that thing you truly want to do and figuring out a way to turn it into a livelihood.

The Eight of Pentacles is known as the “apprenticeship card.” It refers to developing craftsmanship and expertise; putting your all into a project and being satisfied with the results.

It can be as simple as being 100 % focused on your work and wanting to show the powers that be your level of dedication and service. And it can be as innovative as taking something you are uniquely capable of and turning it into a career.

The Eight of Pentacles — this version from the Gypsy Palace Tarot — is all about dedicating yourself to perfection and craftsmanship. It relates to fully investing yourself in a skill or trade. It’s not about seeing what you do as drudgery, but being totally engaged in the process. In that respect it’s not “work; it’s a labor of love.

That doesn’t mean there’s no return on your investment. And it doesn’t mean that whatever you’re doing ever has to become boring or routine. This card can also refer to shifting gears — as in finding your calling at a point where you might have already considered yourself well on the road to success in some other profession.

Your challenge this month is to embrace that aspect and apply it to your work. Whether that means improving upon something you’re already good at, or learning to master new skills. Like the figure in this card, it may be a stepping stone to something bigger and better down the road. But taking pride in your work and honing your skills now will see you one step closer to those goals.
