Aries: Four of Cups

This month, with your ruler (Mars) opposing Neptune, you may be dealing with feelings of apathy, uncertainty, disillusionment or discontent — especially regarding your personal relationships.

The Mars / Neptune opposition can see you focusing on what’s missing in your life, rather than what’s right there before you. It can see you wondering whether there’s something (or someone) else out there that would excite or inspire you.

This is the Four of Cups from Mary Griffin’s beautiful (and sadly, out-of-print) Hezicos Tarot. The figure in the card looks absolutely bored to tears, oblivious to the beauty surrounding her, and the mischief taking place beneath her feet.

The is the essence of the Four of Cups. There’s also generally a lack of energy, which may mean that for the first couple weeks of September, you won’t feel like doing much of anything.

One of the positive aspects of this card though is that it reveals to you exactly what’s “wrong with this picture” and allows you the opportunity to make it right.

It can get you thinking about how things could be — in an ideal world or at least with respect to following your dreams — and then what you can do to make those dreams a reality. While you may start out thinking “what’s the point?” you’ll have a clearer idea of what’s worth salvaging and what could use a little more work in the end. .

TAURUS: Eight of Coins

This month, you’ll be thinking about doing business and being more productive. You’ll be focusing on honing your craft and turning your skills into something you can be proud of.

The Eight of Coins — this version from the Ostara Tarot — is called the “apprenticeship” card, a reference to the dedication that is put into refining everything you do into something you can be proud of.

It refers to taking on an interest — a brand new one or a lifelong dream — and devoting yourself fully to it. It doesn’t have to be career related, but because it’s a labor of love wouldn’t it be great if it were? Doing what you love and seeing the money follow is something we all aspire to achieve.

It can be as simple as being 100 % focused on your work and wanting to show the powers that be your level of dedication and service. And it can be as innovative as taking something you are uniquely capable of and turning it into a career.

The Eight of Coins can also refer to an all-work / no-play mentality. But this is all relative, as the hours that you’re putting in will likely not feel like “work” at all. Not if you truly love what you do. This is about being fully engrossed in what you’re learning, creating or developing.

You may find yourself shifting gears or changing direction entirely this month, at a point where you would have thought you were already invested in another profession. If this is the case you can chalk it up the realization that money (income) is not the only valuable currency/

Take some time to think about what you’d really love to be doing if money were no object. And then get to work developing a game plan. Chances are good that once you start seriously considering your options, taking steps toward making them happen will come to you naturally.

GEMINI: Six of Cups

With the New Moon in your home and family sector with this month (and with your ruler, Mercury, turning retrograde), you may feel the urge this month to reach out to those who remind you of life’s simpler pleasures, such as a family member or a childhood friend.

The Six of Cups — this version from the Tarot Illuminati –speaks of innocence, wonder, sentimentality and reminiscing about the past. You may be missing someone, longing for the comforts and companionships that have gone by the wayside over time.

You could also hear from an old friend unexpectedly. Someone who’s been on your mind and who takes you on a trip down memory lane, reminding you of long-forgotten events that come rushing back to you in a wave of nostalgia.

This is also a good time to surround yourself with children — your own or someone else’s. Seeing the world through their eyes can help you to recapture the innocence and wonder that comes from seeing things in a different light. It can also help you to resist allowing yourself to become jaded by life’s small disappointments and letdowns.

It’s not the time to bring old grievances back to the forefront. It’s time to focus on pleasure, playfulness and joy, and working on creating new memories with those you love.

You may have been taking life too seriously and find yourself needing to get in touch with your inner child. You now may have to let your guard down and allow yourself to trust again — especially if you’ve been shielding your heart from pain. The Six of Cups is about sharing and bringing the happier memories from your past forward to today.

Cancer: Eight of Wands

This month you’re likely to feel like things are moving very quickly for you, and that you’re going to have to stay on your toes to take advantage of all the opportunities coming your way.

The Eight of Wands — this version from the Deviant Moon Tarot — also refers to mobility and change, almost always for the better. This is a time of bursting with new and fresh ideas, juggling interests and overseeing several different projects at once.

This is also a messenger card, so don’t be surprised if you receive important news. You may be given the green light to go ahead and get moving on a project that’s been in the works for some time.

The Eight of wands is all about action, progress and momentum. It’s about getting things done and making things happen. be as simple as ticking off all the little things on your to-do list, and it may be as significant as making great headway on an important project.

While it might feel to you like there just aren’t enough hours in the day, you could be surprised when the month is over to see how much you really accomplished.

The Eight of Wands is a high energy card and also sometimes refers to travel. In that respect it relates to being literally and physically on the go. Are you planning a weekend getaway? Use this extra energy to make preparations for your trip.

There’s a sense of progress and swiftness in this card, as if to say “things are happening, and they’re happening NOW.” Everything (the ship. the waves, the dolphins) moves seamlessly forward in this card with all of it gathering momentum. That is the essence of the Eight of Wands. It’s about staying focused and present and aligning yourself with what’s happening around you so that you become a part of it rather than fighting against it.

LEO: Page of Pentacles

This month, with a lineup of planets moving through your 2nd and 3rd houses, you’ll have more incentive to pursue your interests as well as honing the skills that you already possess.

While the 2nd house is associated with earning and making money, the third is more about being creative and innovative — perfect for delving into something like music, poetry, art, or any creative endeavor. Similar to the Page of Pentacles — this version from Jennifer Galasso’s Crystal Visions Tarot — which refers to the desire to develop skills that can be applied to material enterprises.

The Page of Pentacles may be someone in your life; if so he or she is here to teach you something. This person may be immersed in a hobby or trade; He or she may be a student or apprentice; and he or she may just starting a new job and filled with all the inspiration and anticipation that comes with taking on a brand new project.

This version sees a young woman seated high up in the branches of a tree. This may be a sacred space for her: if you look around her you can see where she’s carved figures of woodland nymphs into the surrounding branches. Lush green vines wend their way up the trunk and over her dress, suggesting that she’s been there quite a long time.

You may be thinking of going back to school or learning a whole new trade. You may be immersing yourself in your own studies — either formally or informally, as in teaching yourself a new skill or perfecting one you’ve already begun to develop.

The Page of Pentacles invites you to recapture that youthful exuberance and thirst for learning that may have gotten lost somewhere along the way. It encourages you to dust of the books or pick up a creative instrument of your own and try your hand at refining, improving and ultimately mastering it.

VIRGO: Two of Sticks

Are you in need of more confidence and self-assurance these days? With Mercury (your ruler) turning retrograde, bringing the total number of retrograde planets to seven this month, you may be starting to feel overwhelmed by the weight of your own insecurities.

The Two of Sticks is the Rabbit Tarot’s version of the Two of Wands. He looks pretty dejected here out there in the middle of a snowstorm without a friend in the world. The sticks he’s carrying don’t seem heavy at all, but they’re somehow preventing him from moving forward.

This card indicates a struggle with keeping things in balance in your life. You may have great ideas and plans for the future (as seen with the one branch held high in the rabbit’s hand) that get weighed down by practical concerns — money, time, scheduling conflicts, etc. Or you may be held back by a lack of faith in your own abilities.

The Two of Wands is traditionally associated with daring, courage and initiative — which this little guy could use in spades. And he’s going to have to find them if he wants to get out of the rut that he’s in; otherwise he’ll freeze to death under a blanket of uncertainty and doubt.

The Two of Sticks says you’re going to have to put your neck on the line sometimes in order to get what you want out of life. You can’t let your fears (of making the wrong move or not being fully prepared) get in your way. If you’re wavering over a decision due to your own insecurities, consider the consequences of not choosing at all. You risk squandering important opportunities if you let your fears hold you back.

Libra: High Priestess

This month, with the New Moon taking place in your 12th house of secrets, psychic visions and hidden gifts and talents, you may feel the need to step away from all the hustle and bustle of the outside world and retreat to your own private sanctuary.

The High Priestess — this version from the beautiful Aya Takano Tarot — represents intuition, serenity and wisdom. She encourages you to seek guidance from within and to heed your inner voice. In this respect you may need to find your place of quiet and solitude in order to best access her messages.

This High Priestess steps out under the night sky from a veiled canopy. She stands between the moon and stars to commune with magical creatures and night-blooming lilies in her garden.

Notice how she strains to extract the symbols from the ethers around her. The impressions she receives are not always be easy to decipher. The High Priestess is wise and perceptive but even she has to make sense of all the messages she receives.

Like the High Priestess in this card, you may need to make time for quiet reflection and introspection, Getting away and communing with nature or going on a spiritual retreat are good options. But just taking time to quiet your mind can help you to satisfy these leanings.

The High Priestess is at home in the world of arcane knowledge and esoterica. She’s both young and old, masculine and feminine, innocent and wise. She is the keeper of secrets, knowledge and mystery.

You may be getting more in touch with your own intuition or experiencing profound instances or deja vu or synchronicity. It’s important to embrace these visions and try to understand them, rather than shying away from them. They can bring insights into not only your own personal choices, but the direction you need to be heading in the coming days.

Scorpio: Seven of Cups

This month may see you feeling pulled in a million different directions, either torn by competing interests and desires or drawn to the kind of mindless diversions that cause you lose sight of your priorities.

The Seven of Cups is a card of temptations, often fueled by irrational thoughts or fantasies. There can be too many options available, which makes it hard to decide. But it’s often a case of wishful thinking and foolish day-dreaming that can interfere with actual progress.

This is the Seven of Cups from the beautiful Ceccoli Tarot. The white rabbit in this card appears to have multiplied, leaving Alice confused about whether any of them are real and if so which one is the original.

She may be leaning toward the one that pokes his head out of the hole right in front of her, but she seems to be  confused and distracted distracted by the others. This is one of the main dilemmas with the Seven of Cups. There are so many choices to be made, with some more appealing than others.

What you long for may look so much more appealing than what you already have, but it’s also quite possibly an illusion. And even if it isn’t you have to remind yourself that it’s not going to come about by sitting around daydreaming about it.

There are elements of seduction also inherent in this card. Being seduced by something intangible or just out of reach, or being lured in by a fantasy that falls short in the harsh light of day.

While you may think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, chances are good that once you got there you’d want nothing more than to return back home. The message behind this card is to aim for reachable goals and to participate in attaining them rather than allowing yourself to fall into the trap of wishful thinking.

Sagittarius: King of Swords

You may have to put your foot down this month and be stern with someone that you’ve let slide in the past. Alternately you may be on the receiving end of someone else’s objective and impartial sense of discipline.

The King of Swords is a no-nonsense individual who is expected to mete out justice with a fair and authoritative hand. He may be a parent, a supervisor, a judge, or even a friend that steps in to give you a reality check when you need one most.

As with all court cards this can also refer to you — or to a state of mind that you need to develop — in order to preserve a sense of order in your life.

You may have felt taken advantage of by someone who has overstepped their bounds with you and this card encourages you to resolve that problem by taking a more authoritative stance.

This version of the King — from the Druid Craft Tarot — appears to be deep in thought. He’s weighing his options with his very imposing sword at the ready. He sits high on a hill looking over his Kingdom, prepared to act if necessary.

The King of Swords is also intelligent, strategic and analytical. He’s inherently impartial. He doesn’t mince words, and he doesn’t listen to excuses. He makes his decisions based on logic and reason rather than compassion and empathy.

This card can refer to a need for justice and symmetry in your life. Or it can mark the presence of someone whose sense of authority and justice overrides personal investments. Whether this refers to you or to another, the underlying message is the same. Step away from emotional attachments and make your decisions this month based on what is right, fair, and most importantly best for you in the long run.

CAPRICORN: The Hierophant

This month, with a lineup of planets in your 9th house and your ruler (Saturn) still retrograde in Aquarius  — you may be taking a more serious look at what you believe in and how you communicate those beliefs to others.

This card speaks of pursuing knowledge, studying tradition, reflecting on Universal laws and principles and deciding where we stand.

The Hierophant is referred to as the Pope in some decks. But it’s not only about religion. It’s about carrying the wisdom of the ancients forward. as a means of gaining a greater understanding for yourself and using it to guide others.

In this version, from Charissa Drengsen’s Steampunk Tarot — the Hierophant in none other than everyone’s favorite mastermind, the wise, brilliant and humble teacher, Albert Einstein.

The Hierophant him- (or her-) self often refers to a spiritual leader or someone who makes (and enforces) rules about social behavior.

There may be someone you look up to in much the same way. It could be a preacher or guru, a counselor, a writer or speaker or even a friend. The Hierophant can take on any of these forms: the main component is a message that inspires you and gets you thinking.

Whatever role he or she plays in your life, you can know that there’s a reason for questioning your values. It’s all about letting go of what no longer serves you (spiritually or philosophically) in order to make room for what does.

AQUARIUS: The Magician 

This month, with Saturn and Jupiter now both prominent in your sign, you may be feeling like you can accomplish anything! This combination is innovative and dynamic; it brings together the two planets best suited for creating “magic” in the signs best known for energy, action and initiative.

The Magician in this card — from Vanessa Decort’s gorgeous Sun and Moon Tarot — is seen delineating an astrology chart in heavens. An Ouroboros (world snake, known for devouring its own tail and swallowing itself, only to be born again and again) is placed around the chart wheel’s circumference.

In the center of the wheel are the Magician’s tools — a wand, cup, sword and pentacle. Esoteric symbols (yin-yang, a lemniscate, Eye of Horus and horse-head talisman) are also seen inside the wheel.

The Magician stands on a beach with waves lapping at the shoreline. Stars twinkle in the night sky while a fire blazes to his left and a monkey gazes out from a pile of rocks on his right.

But this is not your typical Magician: he marches to the beat of his own drum, while the Monkey in the foreground embodies the clever and playful spirit of the Magi.

Take some time this month to think about what makes you unique and what skills you and you alone possess. Every one of us has something that we’re so passionate about — and properly channeled, this can become your calling.

It’s all about making the best and most powerful use of that thing that makes you YOU. Like the Magician in this card, you’ll want to remember that all of your resources are right there at your disposal, and will only need to be accessed in order for you to create something “magic.”

Pisces: Two of Swords

With the Full Moon in your sign this month and your ruling planets (Jupiter and Neptune) but retrograde, you could be feeling like you’re being pulled in two different directions. Or you could be struggling with important decisions that have been weighing heavily on your mind.

The Two of Swords can refer to an impasse or stalemate that’s more likely than not a result of your own indecision.

It can refer to a pivotal moment in time where you recognize that the options before you are equally appealing (or terrifying) and that whatever decision you make will have a huge impact on your life.

In this respect it can refer to inaction and immobility. Sometimes this is due to fear: “What if I make the wrong decision?” But it’s just as often related to a desire to not have to choose at all.

This version of the card — from the gorgeous Tarot Mucha — has the classic figure of a woman on a beach blind-folded under a crescent moon. She’s detached herself while the Swords (decisions) before her take form. She may be leaning toward one option (toward her right which is associated with emotions, psychic perceptions, creativity and spirituality), but she hasn’t yet taken a stand.

This is the dilemma with the Two of Swords. It tells you that while either decision leads to a different outcome, you can’t know the exact nature of that outcome until you make your choice.

Weigh your decisions carefully this month, knowing that they can have far-reaching repercussions. While you may need to step back and consider each option carefully, in the end you will have to decide and then abide by that decision.
