Ace of Cups

You may feel as though your Cup is running over today — physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

The Ace of Cups is a card of promise and opportunity, a new or fresh perspective that is mirrored right back to you by the Universe.

All Aces are related to new and unformed energy. So even if it does manifest as something material for you — a new romantic interest or some form of external validation for example — the bottom line is that it creates a “feel good” energy which reverberates throughout your very being.

As this is the Ace of Cups, and Cups refer to emotions, intuition and feelings, it’s likely to manifest on one of these levels. Love and romance for starters. But also affection, intimacy, sharing, closeness and the expression of feelings.

In this version of the card — from Robin Ator’s Prairie Tarot — we see three brightly-colored birds at a bird bath. One bathes in it, one perches on the side and the third one is coming in for a landing.

Think of how many opportunities you have — some you may not have yet considered (hence the bird on its way in). This card represents opportunities for happiness and fulfillment. It speaks of fertility, birth, newness and promise.

Like the three birds depicted on this card, there’s a sense of joy and appreciation for all that has been provided for you. Today is ripe with potential and opportunity. What you make of it — and how open you are to the possibilities before you — is entirely up to you!

Eight of Swords

As Mercury opposes Saturn today, you may need to think about your own limitations, and how you’ve contributed to the obstacles that stand between you and your goals.

The Eight of Swords speaks of self-imposed limitations. You may feel powerless in your current circumstances and may be so caught up in blaming the people or events that have brought you to this that you’re unable to see a way out.

In this version of the card — from the gorgeous Shadowscapes Tarot — we see a graceful swan rendered almost entirely immobile by a the thorny branches of a blackberry bush. Eight Swords are placed strategically around her, amongst the decaying carcasses of earlier captives.

She longs to break free, but her struggles against the confines of her “cage” cause her to get even more tangled in the bush. A tiny hummingbird flits above her taunting her with its agility.

But look closely at the hummingbird and you can see that it’s not taunting at all. It’s actually showing the swan the way out. It flutters its tiny wings and coaxes her toward the light.

If it can just get the swan to stop panicking and calm down, it can navigate its way through the brambles and disentangle her from the brush.

The Mercury / Saturn opposition can be a tough one. It tends to make things seem much worse than they are. Saturn represents limitations and restrictions, and its opposition to the planet that rules thoughts and ideas (Mercury) can make your situation seem more bleak.

But as always with the Eight of Swords there is a way out. It may require a bit of ingenuity — much like is seen in this card. But it mainly involves simply opening your eyes, changing your perspective and finding a workable solution.

Four of Disks

Today’s card — Four of Disks from the Tarot of the Holy Light — is all about holding onto what you have in order to preserve and protect it.

This may be tied to money and possessions (as Pentacles are linked with the Earth archetype and therefore material and mundane concerns), but it also extends to attitudes and belief systems.

In the traditional Rider-Waite style cards a figure is usually seen holding on tightly to four gold coins, symbolizing both the desire to protect what he has and the inability to attain more. In this respect there are elements of hoarding and controlling as well as a bit of a miserly approach.

But here we see an Eagle (the animal totem for Venus) nesting in a bed of flames (Mars). Below her are four orbs (the four elements) insulated in a protective shell. She has to be able to adapt to her environment in order to protect her fragile eggs.

This scene takes place in its own protective shell, watched over carefully by a crescent moon. The Sun shines in the background and four different birds (representing four states of consciousness) grace the four corners.

This card is ruled the second decanate of Taurus — the Virgo decanate, which is ruled by Mercury and where Mercury currently resides.

This version of the Four of Pentacles is about way more than money and material possessions. It’s about preservation, protection and control. It indicates a need to watch over the things (and people and attitudes) you’re in charge of without stifling or suffocating them.

Take some time today to loosen up the reins and allow the light to come in. You’ll be better served in the long run by trusting that the Universe will support you if you allow yourself to give up some of that control.

Ace of Stones

Coming on the heels of yesterday’s Star card — and its relationship to how and where you fit into the cosmos — today’s Solar ingress into Taurus brings you back down to earth, shifting your focus to the tangible, manifest world.

The Ace of Stones — the Wildwood Tarot’s stunning version of the Ace of Pentacles — is all about establishing your foundations and finding your place in the material world. It’s about getting grounded, interacting with nature and reconnecting with the Earth.

You may be focusing on mundane concerns today, such as developing a craft, earning a living, and preserving what you’ve acquired over time. The Ace of Pentacles is traditionally associated with money (and new money coming in). But this about way more than that.

This Ace of Stones is a living breathing rock. It emerges from a barren landscape and points toward the sky (consciousness). The patch of grass at its base speaks of growth and new beginnings, while it’s lichen-covered surface reminds you that it’s stood the test of time.

The intricate symbols etched into the Stone are cup-and-ring marks dating back to prehistoric times. They affirm the presence of mystery and ancient wisdom that is a part of our heritage.

Today you may be thinking about your roots, your history and the foundations of your existence. You may be looking about how far you’ve come as you plan your next moves. The Ace of Stones — like the Ace of Pentacles — refers to new opportunities that are rooted in your past.

It tells you it’s time to put your goals into action and turn your thoughts into concrete plans. The Ace of Stones says the time is right to take what you’ve learned and developed over time and make it manifest.

Eight of Coins

As Mercury enters Taurus today, you’ll be thinking about being more productive. About honing your craft and turning your skills into something you can be proud of.

The Eight of Coins is a card of craftsmanship — however that might apply to you. It can be as simple as being 100 % focused on your work and wanting to show the powers that be your level of dedication and service. And it can be as innovative as taking something you are uniquely capable of and turning it into a career.

In this version of the card — from Paulina Cassidy’s whimsical Joie de Vivre Tarot — we see a Fox in wizard’s attire conjuring up a magic potion. He’s focused and dedicated, standing over the bubbling concoction as the cauldron sizzles and boils.

Five disks hang from the limbs of the trees behind him and three more are pinned to his pointy hat. He’s so good at what he does he can afford to take his eyes off the mixture. But he doesn’t dare step away: the successful completion of this project depends on his being right there to make it happen.

The Eight of Coins is also known as the apprentice card. It refers to taking on an interest — a brand new one or a lifelong dream — and devoting yourself fully to it. It doesn’t have to be career related, but because it’s a labor of love wouldn’t it be great if it were? Doing what you love and seeing the money follow is something we all aspire to achieve.

The Eight of Coins can refer to an all-work / no-play mentality. But this is all relative, as the hours that you’re putting in will likely not feel like “work” at all. Not if you truly love what you do. This is about being fully engrossed in what you’re learning, creating or developing.

Take some time today — even if you’re still somewhere punching that clock — and think about what you really want to be doing. Chances are good that once you start seriously thinking about your options, taking steps toward making them happen will come to you naturally.

The Sun conjuncts Mercury today (in Aries) — bringing with it the impetus to deliver messages swiftly and with conviction.

You have something to say? now is the time to say it! The Hawk (Knight of Arrows) — Wildwood Tarot’s version of the Knight of Swords — is a messenger bird, said to be the conduit between Sky and Land. It glides swiftly over mountaintops and swoops down deftly over land and sea to capture its prey.

As an animal totem the Hawk is known as the messenger to the Spirit World. It represents focus, vision, dexterity and acumen. It soars to great heights and dives to great depths. It hovers, watches and analyzes before going in for the kill.

You may have an important decision to make today and an equally important message to deliver. You may be preparing for a presentation of searching for just the right words.

You’re probably not going to feel too much like dilly-dallying. The Sun / Mercury in Aries is much more inclined to “spit it out” than chew it over.

But keep in mind that this conjunction is also what’s known as “combust” — referring to the phenomenon of the Sun’s bright light obscuring Mercury from view. This can manifest as increased frustration and agitation, especially where communications are concerned.

Much like the Knight of Swords, there’s a sense of impatience or urgency to make things happen and because of this you want to remember to temper your communications today with tact and diplomacy. While you will undoubtedly have much to say, you’ll much better results — and much more cooperation — if you say it with courtesy and sincerity.

Ten of Cups

Today you may be thinking about your “happily ever after” in the form of a marriage or soul-mate type relationship.

The symbolism depicted in this card — from the Mythic Tarot’s deck — certainly depicts this type of union.

Here we see Psyche and Eros being joined in holy matrimony, ten golden goblets stacked carefully before them. Psyche has been elevated to Goddess status, her virginal white gown and wings now a shimmering gold. They’re joined together as One, equal in every way.

The Ten of Cups tells you that you’ve achieved something worth acknowledging and celebrating, as seen here in the imagery of this card. It’s about fulfillment and security; a solid foundation of abundance and prosperity, and the sense that you have built something you can take pride in.

But the Ten of Cups — as with all tens — also implies a crescendo or culmination, which forces you to look at the “now what?” aspects of your relationship.

Is it possible to be loved too much or to have so much affection for another that you feel like you’re bursting at the seams? This is the basis of the state of limerence, which is an almost obsessive sense of longing and infatuation — the kind that hurts as much when you’re together as it does when you’re apart.

Falling in love is a beautiful thing. And as long as you’ve got your feet on the ground, it can last a lifetime. But this card also speaks of the capacity to love someone so desperately that you lose track of where you end and they begin.

You want to temper your desires to merge with another with the enough independence and autonomy to sustain one another separately. This is how any of us can be elevated to our own divine statures, by making the sum of the parts greater than the whole.

King of Swords

You may have to put your foot down today and be stern with someone that you’ve let slide in the past. Alternately you may be on the receiving end of someone else’s objective and impartial sense of discipline.

The King of Swords is a no-nonsense individual who is expected to mete out justice with a fair and authoritative hand. He may be a parent, a supervisor, a judge, or even a friend that steps in to give you a reality check when you need one most.

As with all court cards this can also refer to you — or to a state of mind that you need to develop — in order to preserve a sense of order in your life.

You may have felt taken advantage of by someone who has overstepped their bounds with you and this card encourages you to resolve that problem by taking a more authoritative stance.

This version of the King — from the Druid Craft Tarot — appears to be deep in thought. He’s weighing his options with his very imposing sword at the ready. He sits high on a hill looking over his Kingdom, prepared to act if necessary.

The King of Swords is also intelligent, strategic and analytical. He’s inherently impartial. He doesn’t mince words, and he doesn’t listen to excuses. He makes his decisions based on logic and reason rather than compassion and empathy.

This card can refer to a need for justice and symmetry in your life. Or it can mark the presence of someone whose sense of authority and justice overrides personal investments.

Whether this refers to you or to another, the underlying message is the same. Step away from emotional attachments and make your decisions today based on what is right, fair, and most importantly best for you in the long run.

Three of Coins

Today is a good day to put your head together with others and work on bringing a project to fruition. The Three of Coins is a “teamwork” card, among other things.

It’s about hitting your stride and seeing initial results of something you’ve been working hard on. Sometimes you need help to take it to the next level, even if that comes in the form of a critical eye.

The Three of Coins — like all threes — refers to the initial stages of progress where you’ve taken an idea (the Ace), put it into production (the Two), and are making progress now toward creating something real (the Three).

The imagery in this card describes this process beautifully. All three of these creatures are working together in harmony, with the central figure holding a coin that has a Full Moon inscribed on it while the other two are presenting him with coins of their own: one with a crescent (New) Moon and the other a crescent (Balsamic) Moon. These three phases of the Moon refer to the stages of a project from start to finish.

There’s an interdependence depicted here and a camaraderie. Each of these figures needs the others and all of them are contributing equally.

It’s a good time to reach out to others and ask for help if you need it. It can’t hurt to offer it to those who’d benefit from your assistance too. You may need a little push to get past a hump, or you may need the discerning eye of someone you trust.

The Three of Coins says that you’re making progress and should be feeling good about what you’ve accomplished so far. But there’s still work to be done, and you won’t be able to do it alone.

Today’s Mercury / Pluto sextile may see you taking a more serious approach to pursuing your interests as well as honing the skills that you already possess.

The sextile aspect is creative and harmonious — perfect for music, poetry, art, or any creative endeavor. Similar to the Page of Pentacles — this version from Jennifer Galasso’s Crystal Visions Tarot — which refers to the desire to develop skills that can be applied to material enterprises.

The Page of Pentacles may be someone in your life; if so he or she is here to teach you something. This person may be immersed in a hobby or trade; He or she may be a student or apprentice; and he or she may just starting a new job and filled with all the inspiration and anticipation that comes with taking on a brand new project.

This version sees a young woman seated high up in the branches of a tree. This may be a sacred space for her: if you look around her you can see where she’s carved figures of woodland nymphs into the surrounding branches.

Lush green vines wend their way up the trunk and over her dress, suggesting that she’s been there quite a long time.

A single jewel-encrusted Pentacle is placed prominently in the tree, with smaller faceted crystals below it. She closes her eyes and strums the lute she caresses in her hands, fully immersing herself in the music.

You may be thinking of going back to school or learning a whole new trade. You may be immersing yourself in your own studies — either formally or informally, as in teaching yourself a new skill or perfecting one you’ve already begun to develop.

The Page of Pentacles invites you to recapture that youthful exuberance and thirst for learning that may have gotten lost somewhere along the way. It encourages you to dust of the books or pick up a creative instrument of your own and try your hand at refining, improving and ultimately mastering it.

Ace of Spirals

On the heels of yesterday’s total Solar Eclipse of the Sun at 29° Pisces — and the last day of winter for those in the Northern Hemisphere — the Sun has now fully stepped into Aries.

What better card to honor this transition than the Ace of Spirals from the gorgeous Chrysalis Tarot? The card features the head of a Ram (symbol for Aries) with prominent spiraled horns.

Feathers from different species of birds encircle his head like a ceremonial headdress — I counted 22 in all, perhaps this is a symbolic reference to the 22 cards in the major arcana.

The Peacock feather — known as the “eyes of the stars” — is said to represent an awakening, awareness, insight and luck, all fine Aries keywords.

The Ace of Spirals is this deck’s version of the Ace of Wands. Its keyword is “Energy.” It refers to the Arian qualities of action, impulse, fearlessness and drive. Like all Aces, the Ace of Spirals is a pure, raw, untamed energy. It’s an essence that can be formed or shaped or planted like a seed.

This feels like a kinder, gentler Ram; there’s a soulfulness in his eyes and a certain dignity in his stance. He’s got an “all-knowing” quality about him, made even more distinct by the timelessness of the celtic knot that encircles his neck.

The Ace of Spirals — as well as the Sun moving into Aries — is all about inspiration and potential. It invites you to ask yourself what you really really want that you haven’t (up to now) put your whole heart and soul into? And what are the chances of making it a reality unless you do?

The Moon is in Aries today too — joining Mars, Uranus and the South Node — so there’s no dearth of this fiery, dynamic energy. It’s time to offer your intentions up to the Universe with every reason to expect you’ll be rewarded for doing so. It”s time to push all negativity aside and replace it with optimism and inspiration. If you’re truly serious about manifesting your desires, there is no time like the present to do it.

The Empress

As Venus moves into Taurus today, it’s a good day to get in touch with your true self and your own wants and needs. Usually the Empress card is about nourishing and taking care of others but as the image on this card implies you also need to give yourself that same exact, loving care.

You can do this by going deep within yourself and “listening” to what your “soul” is saying and allowing yourself to be nourished by stepping aside from your daily routine and being kind to yourself.

Pampering yourself should be high on your list of priorities today also as Venus in Taurus is about the finer things in life and immersing yourself in their enjoyment … savoring life through all five senses.

Once you slow down enough to feel your true self you can see that the world is your oyster and are open to new opportunities coming into your life. If you find yourself in a situation today where you have to choose between someone else and yourself… choose yourself! It may not feel comfortable for you and if it doesn’t perhaps that is because it is something you need to do more of.

There is a rich inner world that each of us — male or female — possess, yet few of us take the time to fully explore. It’s a lush, fertile garden where primitive instincts and natural desires reside.

The woman in this card is at one with nature. She’s at home among the exotic birds and butterflies — as well as all the bounty of fruits and foliage that surround her. She’s nurturing yet commanding and exotic yet organic.

There is no shame in choosing “you” over someone else and look at the benefits this will bring you. With more self love and acceptance for yourself you will find this flowing out towards others where it then comes back to you. In other words… what you give out you get back.
