Ten of Cups

Today you may be feeling like all is right in your world again. The Ten of Cups is a gratitude card: it refers to a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction with where you are and what you have.

Sometimes this is a marriage card, a joining together with someone else who shares your happiness. And sometimes it’s an accomplishment card — coming to a point where you’re able to count your blessings and express contentment with your present circumstances.

If you’re not feeling these things — look around you: the glass is at least half full! This extends well beyond financial or material security. It’s more about family, lasting friendships and a comfort — in your home and your community — surrounded by people you love.

You want to align yourself with a vibration of gratitude as the Ten of Cups speaks of not only getting what you’ve “asked” for (via the principles of law of attraction) but also being thankful for all that you’ve received.

In this version of the card, the — from the Tarot of Pagan Cats –– a family of cats bask in the sunlight that pours in on them from the landscape behind. A rainbow banner hangs from a table behind them, upon which 10 full cups are placed.

The feline parents are busy grooming one another while their offspring play at their feet. You can “feel the love” that is present in this image and know that all is as it should be for them.

The Ten of Cups is all about embracing all you’ve established through your connections and interactions with others. It’s about happiness and security in the areas that matter most — with family, friends and loved ones.

This is not the time to think about what is lacking in your life but rather what makes it complete. And while you don’t want to be resting on your laurels, it’s important to acknowledge those who are most important to you and who keep your cup continuously full.

The Moon

For those of you in parts of the world today where the eclipse can be seen you may feel as if your world is turned a bit upside down… with day becoming darker. So it is with this version of the Moon where what is actually in the “sky” bears only a slight resemblance to what is on the “earth”. In other words all is not as it may seem.

The card of the Moon usually stands for confusion and as this eclipse goes off in the last degree of Pisces, a sign known for its intuitive capabilities, you need to be aware of what is “real” and what is “unreal”.

The yin yang symbol in the centre of this image shows that there is a need for balance today as you navigate through waters (emotions) that may seem a little turbulent to you and have you feeling as if you are swimming against the tide or just being pulled around in all directions without any control of what is going on.

If you take a look at the top half of this image though you can see you can overcome any uncertainty or confusion which is around you if you steer to your course and hold true in what you believe.

It is as if you are being shown a blueprint of what may and may not be and the choice is yours of what you make of today. Will it be good or bad? Will it be in your hands or out of your hands?

Eclipses tend to take things out of your hands but there are a few things you can do to mitigate any damage. This is not the day to make major decisions. It is certainly not the day to take any risks or believe all that is around you is the total truth.

There may be a few surprises in store for you in the days to come and if you look back you will see that what you sow today you may reap in the next few weeks as we head into the next eclipse on April 4.

The Empress

As Venus moves into Taurus today, it’s a good day to get in touch with your true self and your own wants and needs. Usually the Empress card is about nourishing and taking care of others but as the image on this card implies you also need to give yourself that same exact, loving care.

You can do this by going deep within yourself and “listening” to what your “soul” is saying and allowing yourself to be nourished by stepping aside from your daily routine and being kind to yourself.

Pampering yourself should be high on your list of priorities today also as Venus in Taurus is about the finer things in life and immersing yourself in their enjoyment … savoring life through all five senses.

Once you slow down enough to feel your true self you can see that the world is your oyster and are open to new opportunities coming into your life. If you find yourself in a situation today where you have to choose between someone else and yourself… choose yourself! It may not feel comfortable for you and if it doesn’t perhaps that is because it is something you need to do more of.

There is a rich inner world that each of us — male or female — possess, yet few of us take the time to fully explore. It’s a lush, fertile garden where primitive instincts and natural desires reside.

The woman in this card is at one with nature. She’s at home among the exotic birds and butterflies — as well as all the bounty of fruits and foliage that surround her. She’s nurturing yet commanding and exotic yet organic.

There is no shame in choosing “you” over someone else and look at the benefits this will bring you. With more self love and acceptance for yourself you will find this flowing out towards others where it then comes back to you. In other words… what you give out you get back.

Knight of Swords

You may be find yourself dealing with a relentless individual today; someone who’s forceful, angry, aggressive or even ruthless.

This Knight of Swords means business. He’s not taking any prisoners or suffering any fools. He may be someone you live with, work with, or know casually. Either way this is not someone you’re going to be able to reason with.

The upside of this version of the card — from the Samurai Tarot — is that you won’t have any trouble knowing exactly where you stand with him. But the downside is that he’s spoiling for a fight and not about to let anyone get a word in edgewise.

The Knight of Swords can be a messenger, or a bearer of “news.” In this case it’s probably not going to be good news — notice how dark and ominous the clouds are and how forcefully the warrior slices through the air with his swords.

The reds and golds on the warrior’s tunic represent passion and drive. The Swords refer to communications and ideas. And the lightning bolts emanating from the storm clouds represent energy and electricity. Together they make for a fiery and dynamic energy that can be combative.

You may be the recipient of some not-so-good news today, or you may be on the receiving end of someone else’s tirade. You could also find yourself in the position of having to act as messenger yourself, in which case let’s hope you’re a bit less threatening and a lot more genial.

In whatever form the Knight of Swords appears to you today, know that you have a choice in now you react. Keep in mind that the message may not be nearly as bad as the messenger. You can try to disarm him with kindness and cooperation, or you can try to deflect some of that energy by meeting him head on.

The Hermit

Saturn turns retrograde today at 4° Sagittarius. The Sabian symbol for this degree is “An old owl sits alone on the branch of a large tree.”

This symbol ties in very well with the Saturn retrograde as well as the Hermit card, both of which speak of gaining insight and wisdom through solitude and introspection.

This version of the Hermit card — from Nicoletta Ceccoli’s gorgeous Ceccoli Tarot — focuses more on introspection than it does on solitude, which is an important feature in many decks.

The woman in this card is dressed in a red-and-white striped tunic, which transforms into a sort of snail-like shell formation behind her. She paces around the edge of another circle — this one a pattern painted onto the floor. Along the outer perimeter of the same circle stands a mirror image of this same woman, in miniature version.

Together they wind their way around the circle, each with the light of a candle to guide their way. The candles provide illumination of a different sort — though they may not even need them: they seem to know the steps by heart. The circular theme is repeated here in the shape of the room itself.

The Hermit card refers to turning inward and seeking guidance from your self. Much like the woman and her mini-me here in this card.

And Saturn turning retrograde reinforces this theme. It forces you to “look back” and to re-evaluate some of your earlier choices, which have in turn led you to where you are today — on your own circular path.

Rather than going in circles you may want to look at this as retracing your steps, which is something the retrograde Saturn wisely imposes upon us. It’s not about repeating past mistakes: it’s about revisiting old hindrances and finding ways to resolve them.

The World

You may be on the verge of closing the door on an important chapter in your life today and preparing to open another.

The World card — called the Universe in some decks — completes the Fool’s journey and as such, speaks of fulfillment, integration and completion.

For example, you could be finishing a course or internship, tying up lose ends on a project that you’re ready to launch, putting a failed relationship behind you and getting back into the dating scene, finishing (and feeling good about) a self-improvement regimen, etc.

The possibilities are endless, but in all of the above scenarios the World card does not signify an ending as much as it does a new beginning. You’ve put something behind you in order to begin anew, a little higher up on the rungs this time.

In this version — from the Tarot of the Magical Forest — the central figure is a cat suspended in mid-air, framed by a laurel wreath and holding two wands.

In each corner of the card stands the symbol for each of the four fixed zodiac signs. The Eagle for Scorpio, the Water bearer for Aquarius, the Lion for Leo and the Bull for Taurus.

Note that all four symbols are winged as if they are there to bring out the best in the attributes of these signs and not the negatives. These four figures also correspond to the winged figures surrounding God’s throne in the Book of Revelations.

Apart from those references though, the message behind the world card is best received with insight and awareness. Ask yourself: “What is is I’ve learned through all that I’ve experienced in this chapter of my life?” and “What must I now give up in order to start anew?” If you can answer those two questions with honesty and humility, you’ll be able to carry those lessons into the next chapter.

The World card is a card of both fulfillment and completion. With that in mind, it’s time to put the finishing touches on projects that are almost finished, and also time to rest anything that just didn’t pan out for you. You’re preparing to start a whole new journey, and in doing so will want to with as clean a slate as possible.

Five of Pentacles

Coming on the heels of yesterday’s upbeat and sociable Venus trine Jupiter, we have Venus squaring Pluto today — a completely different (and unfortunately far less joyful) energy.

Venus / Pluto aspects tend to intensify emotional responses, especially regarding personal relationships. This aspect represents a sort of collision (square) between the “love’ planet — Venus — and the planet associated with pain, loss, fear, shame and rejection — Pluto.

This energy is illustrated here — in the beautiful Ceccoli Tarot version — in the form of a tender young woman sitting alone in the dark, looking sad and forlorn. A flock of songbirds has taken up residence in hair, with one of them plucking at her heart. A single tear falls from her downcast eyes.

The Five of Pentacles refers to feeling lost and alone, isolated or excluded, shut out, rejected or unworthy. It doesn’t have to manifest in a big way. It can be as “simple” as being dismissed or overlooked — an insignificant occurrence that in light of the Venus / Pluto square takes on a life of its own.

It’s a harsh word, a careless remark, a lack of consideration or a call that doesn’t come. Something that makes you feel small, dejected or demoralized.

Keep in mind that Pentacles relates to more than just money. It has to do with values in general and self-worth. Allowing the inconsiderate acts of others to make you feel small says a lot about how much value you place on yourself.

This is what you want to think about today as you look at how these incidents affect you and what you can do to offset their impact on your own sense of self-worth. There can be feelings of shame and embarrassment — or fear of being rejected — associated with reaching out for help.

Take some time today to nourish that tender heart of yours and remind yourself that you’re worthy of being loved and accepted. The challenge with the Five of Pentacles — as with the Venus / Pluto square — is not to give in to those fears, but to overcome them.

Two of Swords

Today’s Mercury / Jupiter opposition could have you feeling like you’re being pulled in two different directions. Or you could be struggling with important decisions that have been weighing heavily on your mind.

The Two of Swords can refer to an impasse or stalemate that’s more likely than not a result of your own indecision.

It can refer to a pivotal moment in time where you recognize that the options before you are equally appealing (or terrifying) and that whatever decision you make will have a huge impact on your life.

In this respect it can refer to inaction and immobility. Sometimes this is due to fear: “What if I make the wrong decision?” But it’s just as often related to a desire to not have to choose at all.

Today’s Mercury / Jupiter opposition has some assistance though — in the form of a supporting aspect to Uranus. This can break up some of the crystallization, making it easier to think outside the box and come up with solutions to whatever impasse you’re facing.

This version of the card — from the gorgeous Tarot Mucha — has the classic figure of a woman on a beach blind-folded under a crescent moon. She’s detached herself while the Swords (decisions) before her take form. She may be leaning toward one option (toward her right which is associated with emotions, psychic perceptions, creativity and spirituality), but she hasn’t yet taken a stand.

This is the dilemma with the Two of Swords. It tells you that while either decision leads to a different outcome, you can’t know the exact nature of that outcome until you make your choice.

Weigh your decisions carefully today, knowing that they can have far-reaching repercussions. While you may need to step back and consider each option carefully, in the end you will have to decide and then abide by that decision.

The Fool

Today’s Sun / Neptune conjunction may have you thinking about taking a giant leap of faith into the unknown.

The Fool card is the first card in the tarot, numbered Zero. It represents the onset of the Fool’s journey and refers to new beginnings, fresh starts, a period of awakening and unlimited potential.

The Fool card is so beautifully represented here in Gina Pace’s Pagan Tarot. In this version we meet a young female initiate stepping into the void with only her instincts — represented here by her feline companion — to guide her.

She steps gingerly out into the Universe with only her robe on her back and her familiar at her side. She touches down with her bare feet onto a pathway of stars and feels her way through the darkness.

There’s a starkness in this card and a vastness at the same time. It reminds you that there’s a great big world out there filled with possibilities; a blank canvas of opportunities with which to construct your story.

The Fool card encourages you to consider the possibilities, no matter how impractical or far fetched they may be. But there may also be uncertainty. The young witch in this card appears a bit more cautious and timid than most. But notice she’s moving forward and gaining momentum with every step she takes.

This is the ultimate “leap of faith” card. It’s about jumping into the unknown and trusting the Universe will provide a net. Think about what new adventures are in store for you, and how suspending all beliefs and concerns can get you in the necessary mindset.

You want to think about where you may be focusing too much on the destination (outcome) today and not enough on the journey. It may not be easy to trust in this process, but the magic that can happen as a result is well worth the effort.

Death

Don’t be afraid of the Death card — it doesn’t refer a literal death. It’s more about recognizing the need to put something you’ve been holding onto to rest.

It represents a loss or an ending: sometimes it’s a relationship and sometimes it’s a job or an emblem of security that you’re no longer going to be able to rely on.

Whatever it is, know that you’re probably not going to escape the process unscathed. Change is hard for all of us, and change that comes through circumstances beyond our control is harder still.

That’s the thing with the Death card. It’s not something you’re ready, willing and able to let go of. It’s usually just the opposite. It’s the thing you’re holding onto so desperately that has to go. And as such there may be some grieving that goes with this process.

This version of the card — an homage to the superstitions we’re all so conscious of on Friday the 13th — comes from the beautiful Tarot of Pagan Cats deck.

Here we see a black cat in a cemetery keeping vigil over his master’s grave. The Death card is also the 13th card in the major arcana, another nod to today’s date.

But with all these ominous symbols — the black cat, the headstone, the silver roses and the scythe — notice the prominent Celtic cross that takes up the largest area of the card.

There are references to Druid magic and mystery, the ancient symbols of wholeness, completion and unity. There’s the idea that letting go of something — via “death” in whatever form it takes — makes room for something else to fill its place and become whole again.

Ask yourself what you can do to replenish the things the Universe is forcing you to give up today. Cutting ties and letting go of unhealthy connections is only the first part of the process. Opening yourself back up to receive what the Universe has in store for you is the next.

Venus and Uranus are sextile today, making way for unexpected opportunities to increase your luck.

Venus rules both love and money, so what better way to attract both into your life than to embrace the ideals inherent in the Nine of Cups?

The Nine of Cups is called the “Wish card.” It speaks of manifesting your heart’s desires through aligning yourself with the principles of appreciation and gratitude.

This version of the card is rich in symbolism. A giant gold koi fish leaps into the air against a blood red Moon. The silhouette of a great white heron on the other side of the card frames the fish in a yin yang formation.

These symbols represent the dynamic principles of give and take that are so much a part of the Nine of Cups message. We know that Venus — when it comes to both love and money — must move and flow in order to grow.

As an animal totem, the koi fish represents wealth and material abundance. The heron represents confidence and fearlessness. They move together in harmony in this card, illustrating the need to balance these energies in your life.

Even the colors of this card speak of fortune and opportunity. Red symbolizes action, movement and energy; gold represents prosperity and fortune, and the indigo hues in the background are tied to the crown chakra and third eye.

Along with being the “Wish” card, the Nine of Cups is also a card of Miracles. As there’s so much more focus on what one has than what one lacks, it’s easier to notice small miracles and in even the smallest things. With that in mind, Count your blessings and expect good things today!

Ace of Cups

Mars moves into Pisces today, bring us all a little closer to our emotions and perhaps a little more compassionate, receptive and intuitive — all Piscean keywords.

The Ace of Cups — from the Shadowscapes Tarot depicts this energy beautifully. You can see ripples emanating from the base of the chalice that rests at the bottom of the card.

Waves of movement and energy flow from the mouth of the chalice as well, as small schools of fish and fairies swim along in the currents.

The Ace of Cups is a card of emotional abundance and fulfillment. It’s “love” in its purest form: the compassionate, unconditional, all-encompassing form of love that is the essence of the Pisces archetype.

Mars moving into Pisces speaks of making bold strides toward immersing yourself into these realms. There’s a pull toward increased creativity, inspiration and intuition as well.

If there’s a downside to this energy, it’s the tendency to lack motivation and purpose. Too much “going with the flow” can see you being carried aimlessly along with life’s currents.

You want to keep this is mind today when it comes to making decisions and asserting your needs to others. This is a time of giving and receiving: and you can derive as much pleasure through giving as you can through expressing gratitude for all that you receive.

The Ace of Cups represents a bottomless and reflective pool of love, compassion and emotional expression. You want to open your heart and let that love flow both from you and to you — while at the same time keeping your boundaries clearly defined.
