the Lovers -- Mary El Tarot

The Lovers

Venus conjuncts Pluto today, bringing the planet related to love (Venus) face to face with the planet related to lust (Pluto). The Lovers card is all about relationships and choices that need to be made regarding relationships. These are often complicated by temptations that emerge, forcing you to have to choose between dual principles or desires.

Are you seeing in your own life where an attraction has turned into a fixation or obsession? Or where perhaps you’re relaxing your own set of standards to allow for indiscretions you’ve already made?

The Lovers card — and the Venus / Pluto conjunction — says that the stakes are high and that there may be a price to pay for giving into your passions without considering the long term repercussions.

A third party (leading to infidelity on someone’s part) is one strong possibility. But so is a relationship that’s likely to create tensions with family members or society. A same-sex union. A May-December romance. An inter-racial affair. A relationship that is sure to be frowned upon by your religion. A love affair with your co-worker or boss. The possibilities are endless.

It can also refer to the union of polarities, as seen in the Mary-el version of the card. The figures here are about as opposite as they can get: male and female, young and old, black and white. This is said to represent the alchemical marriage.

The female figure is strong and aloof, the male passive and vulnerable, She is naked, save for a nautilus shell headdress, while he is draped in purity and light. Yet they flow together in an intimate embrace. Even so, there’s an apparent emotional disconnect in this rendition. The female figure stares off into the distance while the males gazes downward.

The angel watching over them in the background is barely noticeable. She doesn’t assist and she doesn’t interfere. This is something to keep in mind today (and all days) as you find yourself struggling with temptation. You do have free will, the choice is ultimately yours, and whatever decision you make will have consequences that you’ll be expected to answer for.

King of Swords

ARIES: King of Swords

This month you’re likely to be thinking more about doing business and finding your place in the world than anything else.

With a line-up of planets moving through your 8th house — the area associated with joint resources and other people’s money — as well as Mars (your ruler) joining Pluto in your public sector, the focus is going to be more on career and professional achievements.

The King of Swords is all about power and authority. Success, Accomplishment. Strategy. Intelligence. You’ll have all of these things at your fingertips and should be taking advantage of them — particularly in the first two weeks of the month.

This is a time for putting your ideas out there — verbally or in writing — and communicating them to others. It’s not the time for ambivalence or uncertainty.

Look at the King in this card. He’s a bit more colorful and flamboyant than we’re using to seeing with the King of Swords. He’s usually rather stoic and somber.

But this whimsical version is just spirited enough to capture the dynamic and playful Uranus in Aries transit you’re dealing with and just dignified enough to capture the Mars in Capricorn transit you’ve got moving through your 10th house.

This King says you can have the best of both worlds. It doesn’t have to be all work and no play. And you won’t get anywhere if it’s all play and no work.

 The Lovers

As Venus sextiles Pluto today you may be feeling the urge to merge. This aspect brings together the planets that rule love (Venus) and sex (Pluto) — among other things.

The Lovers card can bring someone new into your life or heat up an existing relationship. It can ignite (or re-ignite) a rapturous passion. And it can cause you to throw logic completely out the window as you give in to your desires.

Be careful with that though, because Venus and Pluto can also be tremendously seductive. Pluto represents power but as we can see from the figures in this card, it’s the female (Venus) calling the shots here.

This version of the card references the famed mythological sirens who lured unsuspecting seafarers into the rocks. But this sailor isn’t exactly falling for it. While she tries to coax him over the ledge, he holds onto the one thing that can save him — a weapon he’s concealed from view.

The Lovers card can also represent decisions. Choices between lovers (as in a love triangle) or choices between love and something else. In this scenario the choice may even be between life and death.

The Venus / Pluto transit is not likely to be so dramatic. But it does call for you to look at your relationships (and relationship choices) with a more discerning eye.

Sept 2014 Tarot Scopes featuring the Tarot of Delphi

Tarot of Delphi -- the Sun

ARIES: The Sun

This month should see you feeling a sense of satisfaction and contentment over recent accomplishments.

The Sun card is traditionally associated with vitality, warmth and a sense of feeling particularly “alive.” But in this version the focus is just as much on taking care of yourself and manifesting that vitality through soaking in the Sun’s rays and recharging your batteries.

The Sun, Mercury and Venus all move through your 6th house this month — the area associated with work and with self-improvement, which includes your physical and mental well-being. Rest and relaxation is just as essential to that process as are work and productivity.

The “Sun” in this card appears to be setting. It casts its rays onto the ocean in the background, shining across the surface like molten gold.

The image of the woman sleeping comfortably without a worry in the world perfectly captures the essence of the Sun. There’s a sense of effortlessness that’s associated with this card, even as the world keeps on turning around you.

Your ruler (Mars) moves into Sag this month (on the 13th) and into your 9th house — the area associated with personal growth and expansion. After that point there will be plenty of time to spread your wings and fly.

The Lovers

There’s a feeling of exuberance around for you today especially when it comes to your love life. With Venus and Jupiter conjunct it is certainly the time to let your hair down and play!

Although the feelings and emotions you feel today may be somewhat like dancing in water as the two figures in this card suggest.

It also shows that the current of emotions swirling around you both are in sync and you are in this together versus being opposed or coming from different directions.

You never know where the feeling or mood will take you but one thing is certain you will only have eyes for each other and it is a day to forget any petty nonsense of the past which may have been coming between you.

The Lovers in this card are portrayed by a pair of mermaids coming together in a loving embrace.

The angelic figure above holds them together as if there is divine intervention looking out over your shoulder just now and a reunion is in order that you may not have seen coming.

As you find yourself caught up in the heady emotions of joy, love and togetherness you might wish to spare a thought for how things could be like this if you only let go of anything from your past that sometimes holds you back.

Tarot of the Zirkus Magi -- the Lovers

ARIES: The Lovers

Relationships and relationship issues are going to be hands down the biggest area of focus for you this month.

That doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. But what it does mean — with Mars (your ruler) moving through your relationship sector and in hard aspect to both Pluto and Uranus — is that it should be “interesting” at the very least.

The Lovers card brings all of your relationship issues to the forefront. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It refers to decisions that must be made — sometimes between two lovers, and sometimes between love and something else — as well as all the temptations, fixations and complications that are a part of that elusive and intoxicating mystery we call Love.

If you’re dealing with challenges in your own relationship, it may just be a matter of getting out of your own way. You don’t want to be creating problems where there are none to begin with. If you’re just now discovering that Love is not all it’s cracked up to be, join the crowd. You would do well though to put your own needs, expectations and agendas aside.

Check out the figures in this card. Who would have thought the Clown and the Bearded Lady could portray such a fantastic representation of Love? Yet all the pieces are there. The comfort, the closeness, the intimacy — even the whole world fading into the background behind them — are all beautifully rendered here. The angel statue blesses their union from above and who are we to question it?

The Lovers

Sometimes you never quite know what you’re going to get in love and sometimes that statement doesn’t always apply to the other person for you can be equally as ambivalent towards them as they are towards you.

Enter Venus into Gemini today. A placement of Venus that tends to bring out the flirtatious, curious, communicative butterfly which flits, flies and flirts from person to person or situation to situation never quite totally settling upon a set form…. unless caught.

Do not get me wrong the Lovers card is a great card to have and if Venus had been entering a sign, such as, Scorpio, Cancer or Leo (to name a few) today then my interpretation would’ve been different.

But if you like your love in the shape of communicative, curious, never quite pinned down style of that of Venus in Gemini then is what’s being served up for the next few weeks… get ready to flirt!

In today’s tarot card you see a man and a woman with their backs to each other yet they hold a unified stance against their environment as their arms are linked together and they hold the exact same amount of “space” within the card… neither of them are overbearing or taking up more space than the other.

There is no tension here yet there is the unmistakable feeling that something isn’t quite right or that there are things going on around them that they need to watch each other’s back and therefore present a unified front against the world.

The Lovers

Venus moves into light-hearted free-spirited Gemini today, the sign of its esoteric rulership. Venus in Gemini understands the importance of sharing ideas and communicating feelings, which are the foundations upon which happy, healthy relationships are built.

But it also relates to the mental aspects of relating via decisions that need to be made. Sometimes — where the Lovers card is concerned —  it’s a choice between two people, and sometimes it’s a choice between love and something else (career, family, responsibilities, freedom. etc.).

The Gemini duality is present in this version of the card. The yin / yang energy is evident in the most literal sense (the figures are male and female) but also figuratively in that one faces left (referencing intellect) and one face right (referencing feelings).

Also notice that while they are holding hands, they’re both also reaching out for something (or someone) just beyond our view.

They stand waist deep in a pool of water (emotions, the unconscious) while the Sun shines down on them so brightly that it’s nearly impossible to tell where it ends and they begin.

While the Lovers card does relate to merging with another and forming deep emotional bonds, there are always undercurrents of something else — something that must be factored in, decided or sacrificed — that need to be addressed.

The Lovers

As Venus moves into Pisces today — where it is exalted — you may be thinking about the kind of romantic idealistic love that seems only attainable under the rarest of circumstances.

The Lovers card is actually associated with Gemini (which is where the Moon is today). But the painting that was selected for this version of the card is decidedly Venus in Pisces, with the lovers so entwined in an intimate embrace that they appear to almost dissolve into one another.

This painting, known as “the Kiss,” is probably Klimt’s most famous piece. It is believed that he and his muse Emilie Flöge were the models for this painting.

The Loves card often refers to a decision or a dilemma involving matters of the heart. Perhaps you’re wondering where you stand in a relationship; or maybe you’re questioning your feelings about another.

This card also sometimes refers to a literal love triangle. An illicit affair. A clandestine relationship. Or one that would be frowned upon by your family, friends or church.

You may be torn about whether to proceed with a relationship that’s still new. Or you may be considering throwing the towel in on one that has grown stale and old.

the Lovers

In honor of Valentine’s Day, today’s card is the Lovers card — Salvadore Dali’s Los Enamorados.

It doesn’t matter if you’re single, dating, married, separated, divorced or widowed, chances are good you’re going to be thinking about relationships today.

The Lover’s card is about “love.” But it’s not always an easy or definitive love. Sometimes there are feelings of ambivalence or uncertainty, and sometimes there are choices to be made that can complicate things even more.

You may be wondering where you stand in a relationship or whether someone you care about feels the same.  You may be ready to fall head over heels in love and wondering when someone new is coming in.

This version of the card is somewhat reminiscent of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The male and female figures are poised between two columns and leaning in to one another. Their stance is somehow seductive and demure at the same time. The male figure’s nakedness is discreetly hidden behind a giant blue butterfly.

The butterfly and pitchfork are common symbols in this deck and appear to be referencing male (pitchfork) and female (butterfly) energy.

Ask the Tarot: Will My Lover Return?

This past August, my client Karen* was blind-sided (her words) by a breakup with her long-term lover Paul.*

They had been together for six years and had discussed marriage. But she started to feel him pulling away after a business trip in the summer and even went so far as to accuse him of having an affair. It turns out her instincts were right. Paul is now seeing the other woman and Karen is struggling with the emotional backlash.

While she’s still reeling from the breakup, and still dealing with a variety of uncomfortable emotions (feeling angry, hurt, confused and betrayed), she realizes she still loves him.

Decisions, Decisions — the Lovers Card

the Lovers -- Mary El Tarot

If you’ve ever found yourself in the uncomfortable position of being torn between two lovers, you’ll know exactly how difficult it is to make a choice.

You may have looked at others in that situation with disdain — only to find yourself later on in the exact same predicament.

You may have been on the painful receiving end of your loved one being tempted by another, or — even more painful — having given in to those temptations.

The lovers card, for all its exciting-sounding prospects, is a card of difficult (and sometimes next to impossible) choices. It doesn’t generally refer to the kind of passionate love affairs that you read about in romance novels. No. Someone usually gets hurt. Sometimes that someone is you.

This card refers to choices that must be considered, sacrifices that must be made, and consequences that must be accepted.

It can also refer to the union of polarities, as in the Mary-el version of the card.

The figures here are about as opposite as they can get: male and female, young and old, black and white. The female figure is strong and aloof, the male passive and vulnerable, Yet they flow together in an intimate embrace.

Even so, there’s an apparent emotional disconnect in this rendition. The female figure stares off into the distance while the males gazes downward.
