The “ascendant” (or “rising sign” — these terms are used interchangeably) refers to the sign that is “rising” or on the Eastern horizon at the time of birth.
It sets up the rest of the astrological house structure — the 12 sectors that correlate to important life areas — and determine where the planets and other points fall in a natal chart.
This is why knowing the exact moment of birth is so important to astrologers. Most predictive work relies more heavily on houses (which are again determined by the birth time and thus the ascendant) than most lay people realize.
Even weekly horoscopes and monthly forecasts are written more from the perspective of rising signs than Sun signs.
Scroll down for the Rising Sign Calculator. Or use the table below for for an approximate representation based on the 12 Sun signs. If your birth time is “iffy” this may help you to determine your rising sign (ascendant). However it’s far from precise and we can’t stress enough the importance of learning your exact birth time if you want an accurate astrological interpretation.
To find your rising sign using this table, locate your Sun sign in the left column and your approximate birth time in the top row. For example, an Aries Sun person born at 2:20 am would — according to this table — have a Pisces ascendant. A Capricorn Sun sign person born at 12:06 pm would have Taurus rising. And so on.
If you’re looking for a book on this subject, The Ascendant by Jodie Forrest is excellent!
Now looking at the table below, see if you can locate your rising sign, even if you know your exact birth time. You’ll be able to check it against the calculator at the bottom of this page as well. The Symbols for each sign are listed in the right column.
If you do know your exact birth time, you can find your ascendant instantly using the ascendant calculator tool below. But first let’s look at what rising signs are and how they apply to you.
The rising sign represents your instinctive approach to life. It’s what people see when they first meet you and how they might describe you to others. It’s your personality and how you present yourself to the world. This also applies to physical characteristics and limitations.
The ascendant — or rising sign — also sets up the entire natal chart structure, which includes houses (life departments) and what are called rulerships. It also tells you where each of the planets in your natal chart fall (which house they fall in and which house they rule). As you can imagine, having this information is critical for getting the full picture as far as not only who you are, but also information about your relationships, career, finances, family, health and so on.
Let’s look at a brief snapshot of each of the 12 rising signs:
Aries: Aries rising people present themselves as warm, dynamic, assertive and competitive. They’re movers and shakers, throwing themselves eagerly into new ventures that don’t require a lot of forethought and planning. They can be impatient and can lose steam if something becomes tedious or boring. They’re gung-ho about diving into something new and fresh but not so good about tying up loose ends. They’re drawn to that which is new and exciting — anything that challenges them to push past their fears. They tend to act first and think later, relying on their natural instincts, which are generally very good. As Mars is the ruler or Aries, this is further defined by the sign and house placement of their natal Mars.
Taurus rising people tend to be more slow moving. They’re earthy, practical and sensuous, preferring comfort over extravagance and quality over quantity. They like to take their time easing into things — and that includes relationships. They can be infinitely patient and willing to bide their time rather than rushing in head first. They can be hedonistic and self-indulgent. They enjoy savoring experiences with all five senses. They’re generally cool, calm and collected, but when they get mad, watch out! They can be like a bull in a china shop. They can also be stubborn, possessive and resistant to change. While some may see them as lazy, they prefer to call it rest and relaxation. As Venus is the ruler of Taurus, these characteristics can be further defined or modified by the sign and house placement of their natal Venus.
Gemini: A Gemini rising is all about communication. There is a sharpness of mind and restlessness of spirit although not in a negative way. So many things will interest you and there may seem to be not enough hours in the day to do them all. A Gemini rising usually gives a slender body frame perhaps from all the mental energy expended. You will never be without words within a conversation infact you may be the one waiting for the other person or the rest of the group to catch up with what is going on. You will have many interests and hobbies. Romantically you need to connect with your partner on an intellectual level. If you are involved with someone with Gemini rising then brush up on what is going on in the world and/or find out what interests them and start talking to them about it.
Cancer: It’s all about the home and family life for you. You are great at being the caregiver and nourishing those around you. There is a softness to your body which goes well with the mother instinct inside you. For a male with Cancer rising there is the capacity to be on the lookout to what will make the family feel secure and safe alongside wanting to be emotional depended upon by your partner. This works both ways. Cancers are all about emotions, giving and caring which means you will seek a partner and home life that supply you with these traits. You have the ability to listen to those around you and give them advice to help them on their way in life.
Leo: If all the world were a stage and you have a Leo rising then you would be very happy indeed! A Leo rising needs to be seen and appreciated afterall you are the king of the jungle and also the master of your own lair (Universe). There is a sense of the dramatic around you and you make a good actor. Alongside this you have an open heart and are not mean spirited but rather generous with your time, money, emotions. Your partner needs to realise this as if you are not being treated as the “king” you are and you are with a partner who is holding back, being stingy with emotions and finances you will not feel appreciated. You deserve the best because you are the best and there is no getting around that. Just make sure you live up to your innate sense of Leo rising character and don’t take the negative side of it.
Virgo: You are precise, quick thinking and intelligent. For you the world is seen through an intellectual layer where you are discerning on what you want in your life and what you don’t want in your life. You are extremely helpful to others especially animals and those who are ill. Emotionally you may need to be needed in some way and for this reason you may wish to make certain that you needs are being met on an equal basis by your partner although you probably won’t do this and you have a sense of needing to be the “giver” in anything you do. Emotionally you may have the tendency to nitpick those around you and while you think you are doing this for their benefit it may not always feel like this to the person on the receiving end… infact it may feel very much like criticism.
Libra: You have the need to keep your life in balance and have the need to see all sides of a situation. You are not one to rush into an argument but sometimes because of your need to look at the situation as a whole you may open your mouth and find yourself arguing a cause that you don’t fully agree with but nevertheless have opened a can of worms because you were just trying to see the situation from all sides. Libra rising usually gives you a sense of beauty and refinement. You will like fashion and have a fine sense of style. You’ll enjoy all those feminine things ie trips to the beauty salon, hairdressers and being spoilt by your partner. If you are dating someone with a Libra rising make sure you are well dressed as these people have a need to gaze upon beauty.
Scorpio: If you like your emotional life intense then try someone with a Scorpio rising. They are the detectives of the zodiac and want to know everything that is going on. Expect deep and meaningful conversations to be the norm as a Scorpio rising will want to know all your secrets and won’t stop until they do. Warning note: this may including snooping around to find out what they think you are hiding from them. They are intensely loyal, emotionally deep and sexy as hell so if you can handle all of these traits then you are onto a winner with a Scorpio rising. If you want to drive them a bit crazy just act mysterious as they like to unravel a mystery especially if it has a good ending. And it better be a good ending because if it’s not they may be out of your life before you know it.
Sagittarius: There’s a joviality to your outlook on life alongside a need for a sense of adventure. Sagittarius is considered the lucky sign of the zodiac so having a Sagittarian ascendant is the next best thing. It means you will have a need to always be learning, like travel and foreign cultures alongside being able to comfortable immerse yourself within these cultures. Others may see you as outspoken and brutally honest. You are upbeat to be around and usually a bit of a clown in others company. For this reason people flock to you as you take their minds of the mundane and have the capacity to make them laugh. If you can laugh at yourself then so can others.
Capricorn: Life is a journey for you and the road you travel is every bit as important as the destination. Capricorn rising usually hold their looks well into old age as they tend to be so sturdy and solid in their health that by the time you have reached that time in your life you are ready to have some fun whereas others may be thinking of slowing down you are just getting ready to let your hair down. There’s a seriousness to this ascendant that is hard to break through. It allows you to reach success but may also leave you a bit lonely if success becomes your sole purpose in life. Don’t expect a Capricorn rising person to slow down and loosen up their attitudes to life until later in life but when they do they are more sprightly than most around them.
Aquarius: Eccentric and born ahead of your time. That’s what you get from an Aquarian rising. You will place your friends and friendships high on your list of priorities alongside you need to fight a cause. Others may find you a bit stand offish but this is because you get to know people first before allowing them to get close to you. There is also a sense of exquisite beauty usually accompanying an Aquarian rising as it is ethereal and hard to put your finger on. You have a quick mind, a sharp intellect and lightening reflexes when it comes to understanding complexes that are well ahead of their time. Come to think of you you are well ahead of your time. You find love through friendship and friendship through love and anyone who wishes to be your partner should keep these two things in mind.
Pisces: Dreamy and able to immerse yourself in others. You have a healing quality around you just by being in your presence which can work for or against you. If you can manage good boundaries then this healing quality can be used for you to help others but if you allow yourself to become too overwhelmed by others and their problems then you may lose yourself. If Pisces is your ascendant you need to take some time out for yourself and do so frequently in order to replenish your energy levels and get straight in your head what you want versus what others are wanting from you. You’ll be interested in the arts, creativity of all kinds and psychic matters. There is also a high chance that you are a natural born psychic regardless of your Sun sign.
The birth time and place are both necessary for locating your exact rising sign. The table above will not give you precise information. In fact, it can be as much as a full sign off. And while more in-depth interpretations for each rising sign can br found in a good book, such as Jeanne Avery’s The Rising Sign: Your Astrological Mask, you can also leave a comment below (with your date — spelled out please — time and place of birth (City, State and Country), and we’ll be happy to tell you what yours is. Thinking about learning Astrology? I highly recommend Stephen Arroyo’s Chart Interpretation Handbook and Demetra George’s Astrology for Yourself.
Why do I get different rising signs.. I’ve tried sevral sites and I get Pisces, which actually makes sense. On your site I get Capricorn, the complete opposite of me. Any ideas? Born 10/03/71 @3:30pm, Brownsville, NY
If this is Kings County (as Brownsville shows up as associated with Ontario County as well), you are 29° Cap 50. But this complicates things as a minute later would put you at Aquarius rising and so much depends on how accurate the attending physician’s watch was back then. I can’t see how any site would give you Pisces rising: you would have had to have been born a couple hours later. I know you said Cap rising is the opposite of what you feel you are, but you’re already loaded in Pisces energy (with a 29° Pisces Moon and a Jupiter / Neptune conjunction) which would soften that Capricorn energy quite a bit. Not to mention the preponderance of air planets and trines in your chart. I could see why you might feel more Pisces than Capricorn.
This site shows my ascendant is Scorpio, but a couple of other sites show it as Libra. I was born on August 24, 1966 at 11:17 am in Kansas City, Missouri. Can you help? Thanks!!
Hi Alison, you’re 7 degrees Scorpio rising. I’m not sure why the other sites list you as Libra rising (other than a potential misassumption that Daylight Savings Time was in effect in Kansas City when you were born) but you it was Standard time and Scorpio rising. Which one feels more accurate to you? I suspect it’s Scorpio. =)
Thank you so much for the explanation. It has really bothered me. I identify more with Scorpio and that is why I was so confused. Thank you again!
I. Am Taurus may 10 2002 8:00pm I don’t understand how to do this
where were you born? And how precise is that “8:00 pm” birthtime?
I was born march 4 91 at around 7:20 i have been told
Hi Jeffrey — where were you born? City/ State / Country. That’s an important part of the equation…
i was born on 16 sept,1996 at 4:31 pm in RAE BARELI ,INDIA
kindly appreciate with my kind rising star
I’m getting 22° Aquarius 48. (This is Eastern astrology, using the tropical zodiac).
many sites predict capricorn as my rising sign but this site predict that to be aquarius and my home astrologer too.
kindly help me to get my ascendent..please..
details are above mentioned
Hi Raj, the difference may be between a sidereal or vedic chart which would shift your ascendant back approximately 23°. A Vedic astrologer (or one who practices sidereal astrology) would see your ascendant as 28° Capricorn 59, but Western (tropical) astrologers see it as 22° Aquarius 48. Which one do you feel fits you better?
Hi, what’s my rising sign? The calculator apparently will not accept my non-US birth place. I was born on November 12, 1968 at 19:00 (7pm), in Christ Church, Barbados. I look forward to your response… Thanks.
Hi Ken, I’m getting 3° Sagittarius 40. The calculator does accept birth data for those born in other countries but in your case it looks like the longitude and Latitude for Christ Church was not listed. I calculated it using my own software though and this is correct.
Hey I am getting both Leo and Cancer… I was born on April 21st, 1971 at 1020 AM in Augusta, GA
That’s definitely Cancer rising — it’s 12° Cancer 10′.
I calculated Aquarius as my rising sign. I was born on Nov. 26 1959 at 9:46 am in Abernathy Texas Hale County Texas. The built in calculator says Capricorn. Why is this? Please give accurate sign .
It’s definitely Capricorn. I got 2° Capricorn 23 with that 9:46 am birth time. I’m not sure what system you used to get the Aquarius rising (as it didn’t move into Aquarius until around 11:43 am your time).
hi i was born on may 10 2002 at 8:00 pm in Kingston, Jamaica i do not know my rising sun? the bulit in calculator said my rising sun is sagittarius
Hi Larisa — yes it’s 10 Sagittarius 51.
Does the calculator automatically correct for daylight saving time at the given place of birth for people born in summer, or do I have to take care of that by myself ? Thanks for your reply!
It automatically corrects!
I have Sag rising but your chart said it was Cap.
I don’t quite get it unless it was because I was born
In Wartime 1943 at 3 :16 in Reno. Nevada
Perhaps the time change ?
Thank you for your Site… It is an interesting one
Carole
Hi Carole, the calculator should automatically correct for war time. I would check but you didn’t list your birthdate, only the year and time.
Unless you’re referring to the table of ascendants at the top of the page. If that’s the case, yes it could be one sign off… It’s because daylight hours are longer — and nighttime hours shorter — at certain times of the year. The calculator at the bottom of the page should be accurate though.
Hey there! So looking at the picture chart, it shows Libra rising, but the calculator says Leo. I have traits from both so I don’t know! LOL! I’m a Gemini, May 21, 1976 born at 12:04pm in West Chester, PA. Can you help? Thank you SO very much! =)
Hi Karen, the calculator is going to be accurate, the ascendant table is more iffy, based on the time of year you were born and the time of day. With that said, you’re 24 Leo rising.
Thank you kindly =) Have a fantabulous day!
o…..k…. so this table states i have an aries rising but im DEFINITELY have a cap rising
Hi there. The table isn’t going to be necessarily accurate, particularly if you were born in the far Northern or Southern regions (which — with that big a discrepancy — it sounds like you were). Remember that the rising sign (and the house cusps in general) is / are calculated using precise astronomical algorithms, which of course this table is not. Check the rising sign calculator at the bottom of the page and see what it says. All the best.
another site is giving me leo rising and that seems off to me so just for sure i was born june 24 1994 at 10:15 am in Hoffman estates, Illinois
That’s 1 degree Virgo rising.
Hello! The chart says I am Pisces Rising, which is *very* accurate, but the calculator says my ascendant is Capricorn, which is very… not! And other calculators have given me Aquarius Rising. I’m confused!
I am a Virgo Sun, born on September 8th, 1988, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
If this helps: I’ve checked the time zone other calculators place Las Vegas in and it is Mountain (-7), but Vegas actually operates in Pacific (-8). Maybe this could be why I’m getting mixed results?
Oops, forgot the birth time! 4:30 PM
I get 27 Cap rising, and the calculator converted automatically for me to PDT for Las Vegas on your birthdate. I do feel you’re Capricorn rising, but you also have a Neptune t-square, which could explain why the Pisces energy resonates with you. I know Capricorn can seem like a real stick in the mud in print, but there’s a lot wisdom, maturity, and old-soul energy in Capricorn. There’s an ability to pick itself up and dust itself off no matter what life throws in its path. There’s a simplicity and an ability to cut to the chase — to distill things down to their purest essence — that no other sign can compete with. There are so many wonderful qualities associated with this archetype that I think is often unfairly portrayed. If you want to check another online calculator to see what it says, try astro.com. That should also give you Cap rising.
Thanks for the reply, Melodie! I can definitely understand the archetype being misinterpreted, and I really appreciate all of the additional chart info! I will have to read about t-squares and more on Cap rising. My brother is a Cap Sun and our connection is naturally strong & smooth despite growing up separately; maybe this is why. 😉 Will definitely be heading to Astro.com as well. Thanks again! <3
Hi Ashley I admit to being very partial to both Pisces and Capricorn… And as a result consider myself an expert. =) I have met some of the wisest, most soulful and most misunderstood Capricorns and think sometimes their best qualities have been overlooked.
Does a rising sign correlate to a day? 15*44′ Virgo
Hi, in a way it does as the Sun moves approximately a degree a day which means that it would be at that position at the same time every year (in this case around Sept 6th/7th). All of the planets transit through the natal chart — and some will cross that point many times — but only the Sun moves a degree per day.
Born March 30,1984 @10am on a Friday
Hi Rachel the day of the week isn’t important but the birth place is. By the way, did you try the calculator? That should give you the answer you need.
Hello!
I can’t seem to find my country 🙁 I was born in Canton el Sunza, El Salvador, at 12:40 am on January 6th, 1997.
Would really like to know my rising sign! Thank you so much!
Hi there… It’s 3° Taurus 48′. Hope that helps!
Hi, I was born on September 2, 1994 in Saigon, Vietnam. Birth time is unsure of. Based of some relatives it was either 8:30am or 10am. The chart says I’m a scorpio risng, but all of the chart GENERATORS have said libra rising. I have asked other people’s impression of me and they’ve all said I lean more towards scorpio but I cannot be sure. I really would like to know my true rising sign. Thank you.
Hi without the actual birth time you can’t know your rising sign. Also know that the chart / table on this page is just for reference and is not always accurate (this is affected by how far into each sign you were born as well as the longitude and latitude of your birth). There is a calculator further down the page which is accurate. I got Libra rising for the 8:30 am time and Scorpio for the 10am time. There are ways to rectify your birth time but that requires getting it done by a competent astrologer. And there are ways to narrow a rising sign down when it’s in between two signs like yours is (though not necessarily the degrees on the ascendant or house cusps) based on certain aspects of your life: career, parents, health issues, etc. All the best.
My birth date 28.12.1988 1.30am
Hi Mayur, you need your birth place to calculate your rising sign. Once you have that you can input your information into the calculator at the bottom of this page (before these comments) and it will give you your results.

How about July 7, 1993– 12:13am?
